Verizon lied about eris!

I know my son wants navigation, better dialer, 2.1 apps not available on 1.5, etc. But by the same token he will not wipe his phone and lose his contacts, call history, text threads, app settings, and on and on. I have not seen a leak that will preserve any settings whatsoever. So why would I think OTA is coming soon? Even if I got a leak that preserved my old leak 2.1 settings I would have some hope. So are they really close to OTA that will save stuff from 1.5? That's why I think 2.1 will be "Official" vs. OTA, or optional vs mandatory. I do believe they are close to an official release but it will be a flash, just as we are doing now, with a HUGE disclaimer about wiping the phone. But I could be wrong, we shall see.

This is not complaining or being a troll. This is reality and something we all have been discussing for many months now. I can certainly understand if you are tired of it, but then just leave the thread. I agree the OP was a little strong but he/she is probably just frustrated. Verizon/HTC need to get off their butts and get us an official 2.1 release already. Then send out OTA updates with fixes.

The big mistake a lot of us are making is not saving contacts as Google contacts and as some other type of contact instead. When we wipe the phone, Google contacts are put back on while the others are simply lost. I got a few contacts I have as "the other" contact and can't figure out a way to change them without making new contacts.

If he has them all as Google contacts wiping should not be an issue. After you do a few wipes, you get used to it and it isn't a big deal (insert poop joke).

It doesn't matter how VZW releases it, OTA or OTW, just back your stuff up and it won't make a difference.

This thread is now officially epic. I will now go read Bob Loblaw's Law Blog.

Yes, I agree with you. But a couple of things come to mind. What if folks just transferred their address books at the Verizon store when they bought a new phone and do not really know how to do the Google thing? (Or if they don't want to for some reason) But even more importantly, settings on your apps and downloads? The versions for 1.5 and 2.1 are different and will not save settings. What about call history and text threads? Speed dials? See, everything is wiped and only us techies love this shit. To me there is nothing like a reformatted drive to clean stuff up, redownload, reinstall etc. But how many regular folks want to do that. Not many I presume.

Hi...well from what i understand you can upgrade on your own to the 2.1 on the Eris...the only thing is that it violates your 1 yr warranty.

I cannot believe the rampant idiocy on this board. I mean, I know it's mostly a bunch of teenagers whining about their binkie (oops, I mean cell phone) - but COME ON.

Seriously, we just got a new build, dated 4/15. What does that tell you budding geniuses? Perhaps that VZW is STILL TESTING it due to the numerous bugs that WE ALSO FOUND when running the leaks? Hmmmm?? Do you seriously think VZW has nothing better to do with their time than spend 2 months testing software that they have no intention of releasing? For real? They have to make this right, because if they F00k it up, and push an update that wipes everyone's phones, they are going to have a massive PR issues and likely lawsuites. (;) ) Everyone keeps ranting about OTA, and most likely, this will be a PC download and update. They can push the update OTA. What they can't do is backup anything since it all goes thru the Google cloud and not VZW.

There will be a wipe. No way around it. Did you upgrade from XP to Win7? Guess what, it was a total wipe. Verizon may be waiting to put the finishing touches on some kind of proprietary backup/restore solution, but I doubt it. Coming from 10 years of blackberry ownership, I can tell you that where Android is sort of screwing themselves is by having zero desktop integration. With BB Desktop, you can back everything up to the PC/Mac, install whatever OS version that suits you, then selectively restore apps and/or data back to the phone. Android is not fully developed enough to incorporate that feature yet. I'm sure in time they'll come up with something, but short of backup to the Google Cloud (and that's limited to authorized apps, contacts, and email right now) we don't have that option.

Here's why upgrades like this are a double-edged sword:

Verizon promises update by end of Q1. Then they run into some issues (laggy dialer, FB sync issues, etc...) and have to send multiple bug reports to HTC so they can address then and send an updated build. In the meantime, Q1 has ended and they have upset customers who don't have their upgrade. So what do they do?

Scenario #1. Release a buggy update that they know isn't right just to "save face" and appease the geek horde that is clamoring for updates. Update gets released, and geeks everywhere are appalled at the number of bugs and overall Blah-ness of the update. "This is what we were waiting for?" PR nightmare, forums blow up and VZW gets overrun with folks wanting to know why the phone doesn't work right anymore.

Scenario #2. VZW does NOT release the update, instead they are committed to releasing a correctly functioning version, even though that takes time. Geek hordes run around screaming they "been lied to!" and bash VZW for not sticking to their promise.

Scenario #3. No updates at all.

So what's your poison? I don't hear all this internet hollering when Microsoft delays an OS to finish testing. Remember Vista? That's what happens when software gets pushed out the door for marketing/release date purposes, instead of when the software is ready for prime time. Windows 7 release got pushed back at least twice, and we ended up with a solid OS for a change.

Nobody got LIED to, a software release date got pushed back a month or so due to extended testing TO MAKE SURE WE GET A SOLID BUILD. It happens all the time, and sadly, this particular phone seems to have attracted a bunch of whiny-a$$ pouting teens that are pissed coz they don't have a shiny new toy to play with. Grow up, chill out, and we WILL get 2.1 officially. If you have to have it THAT bad - the v3 leak is either the release code or one minor revision away from it. We HAVE 2.1 guys, and it works. For the love of all that is holy, either install the leak, root and install the leak, or SHUT THE F&*% UP, please? Official 2.1 will be here when VZW determines its ready for prime-time. Not a moment sooner. They are still testing it and that should give us all hope that it will indeed be released.

I went thru all of this on my BB Tour, which shipped with BBOS 4.7 and I ran about 6 different beta 5.0 versions all thru the testing process. Eventually, VZW settled on a build they could support and released it. It was probably 6-7 MONTHS after I had started running the beta versions. This stuff takes time and VZW cannot expose themselves to the liability of wiping a million phones and having a buggy OS as the result. Why is it so hard to see that people?

Sorry, but we will have to dismiss your entire post based on the fact that it contains way too much logic. ;)

Use MyBackup Pro. It saves call logs, settings, texts, contacts, etc.
Good info Smacky but the question remains will non techies know that? Will Verizon support it on a wipe? I'm still thinking a disclaimer will do the trick and then we're on our own. I'm happy with my 2.1 I was just thinking of the other guys.

LOL at OTD!

Yeah, I read the first 2 paragraphs, got what I needed from that.

Thanks for posting it, you nailded it.

The most amusing aspect of this post is this: calling *611 is NOT going to get the release date pushed up for the 2.1 release. Sorry. Not going to happen. Care reps have zero control. You're only going to frustrate yourself. It will be released, when it is ready to be released. Not a moment sooner.

Why is anyone complaining about this? If you "need" 2.1 that bad then install the most recent leak. If you don't "need" it that bad, then don't. If you just want to complain then pick a better subject.

I don't need it that bad. Can I complain about having to boil all drinking/cooking/toothbrushing water since Saturday night and for the next few days? I find that much more annoying than running my Eris on 1.5. :D

I would say that that is something worthwhile to complain about. Although, this is probably not the best venue. ;)

I thought they had that fixed today. At one point wasn't it about 8 million gallons / day into the Charles?

Edit: Ouch 8 mil / hour!!

Why is it so hard to see that people?

I agree with your assessment of the situation at portions of this board, as well as the situation at Verizon Wireles and HTC.

Your last sentence, the question as to why these things are "so hard to see" can best be answered, in my opinion, by recognizing the instant gratification culture that has been emerging gradually for some time and is perhaps now into full flower.

To have to wait is to distrust and to distrust is to allow paranoia to become nourished and to allow that to happen is to open one's mouth and reveal it all in a text field here in the forums.

It is an attitude of entitlement, and they'll "prove" that they are entitled by talking about promises made by someone probably trying the darndest to not just make the sale, but to get the heck rid of this person in front of them with that attitude.

No becuase I was told it would be first quarter so that verbal commitment from the Verizon sales rep and it obviously didn't happen so I am unsatisfied customer.

Verbal commitment? Did your contract have a "Android 2.1 Update" clause in it? If not, kindly shut it.

It's not our fault, or Verizon's, that you went ahead and believed a SALES REP's word verbatim. You must be quite a gullible person to not do research, and believe a salesman/woman... think about it.

If you're so upset over being misled by a person who makes a living by peddling phones who probably can barely operate a toaster, then go and flash your phone to one of the leaks. The rest of us will enjoy what we can until they make good on their SUPPOSED word.

Eck. Carry on.

*edit* shining example. I went into Best Buy a few months ago to get a headset for watching TV late at night, and for my xbox. I had the option of either Turtle Beach or Triton, both around the same price. The Triton's were about $10-15 more, and I actually made the fatal mistake of asking a guy working in the game dept. about the difference. As soon as I heard his first "pro" for getting the triton he told me they "were super sweet for listening." I abruptly turned and walked away.

Never assume that a sales rep actually knows what he's talking about. Just because they work there doesn't mean they're qualified to help you.

You gotta do the research before you go. And even then, you still get boned.

When I went to get my MBP, the guy at Fry's Electronics told me that the i5 and i7 MBPs did not recognize two of the four cores. He claimed to own the i5, and when he went to check his "About my Mac" it told him it recognized two cores, not four. There was a ton of other BS I verified with a geek friend of mine afterwards and he told me it was just that, BS. Why would they sell an i7 knowing it didn't recognize all the cores?

I dunno if what that guy was saying was true or not, but had I actually been looking for an i5 or an i7 but didn't get one, I'd be pretty pissed if it changed my mind for the wrong reason. Good thing I was never shelling out the $1499 for it.

But there's nothing wrong in going home and looking up the info. and then coming back, no matter how much you prepared for it. Smart phone users are lucky in that they can just pull out their phone and look up something real quick, comparisons, reviews, pricing, etc.

Blubbering weenies ITT.

OP: Buying a contract product based on promises is stupid IMO. I wouldn't make a purchase decision based on what the salesman/company said was 'on the way'. Look at what you are getting at the time of purchase, and if it's not what you need or want, don't buy it. Whining about Verizon lies and blah, blah, blah...just proves that you should practice patience and get what you want.

I wouldn't go buy a car because the company that made it/sold it said there would be a technical update that will allow the car to fly in 6 months...

To all of those who are upset that Verizon has not released 2.1 to the Droid Eris yet, please go ahead and install one of the leaked versions (1, 2, or 3) yourself. I have installed the second and third versions and have not had one problem since.

The navigation works. All of the 2.1 apps work.

The only regret that I have is that I did not upgrade to 2.1 earlier. The only reason I didn't upgrade earlier than I did was that I was scared that I would turn my phone into a paperweight, but the process was so easy the first time. I immediately jumped at version 3 when I found it.

The thing is, VZW wasn't the only one mentioning 2.1. Of course they're trying to make the sale, they'll tell you your Eris will give you a blumpkin if it got you to buy the phone.

There were plenty of news sites that were "speculating" that the Eris would be upgraded to 2.1, but not much attention was paid to that notion because the Eris was usually mentioned at the bottom of the article about the Droid and Android as a whole coming to VZW.

I fall into the latter. I did my research, but I took the "speculation" as "truth" and just assumed that "ok, I'll pay $150 less than the Droid and get the Eris, and wait two months and get the 2.0 I was gonna get."

Well, 2.01 became 2.1, then 2.1 went from speculated in February to "Sometime before the end of Q1" to now, where we don't know a thing,.

Remember the news the other day about the Sprint phone getting 2.1? Turns out that actually hasn't happened yet. The snapshot of the internal document saying it would be released April 29th was legit, but they still didn't send anything out, as of this morning. So...we're all playing the waiting game.

Moral of the story, if you want the best thing, don't cheap out and by the bargain phone. The Eris is great, but it's a bargain/introductory phone. Some people couldn't help it and had to choose something affordable. I know I did, as mommy and daddy were buying it, so I decided Android, but not $199. If only I had end my contract then and just started a new one using Wirefly or Amazon, I could have gotten a Droid for $79.99 with a new 2 year contract.

Hindsight, 20/20. Just like Barbara Walters.
