Verizon Pre-order, Release date, and speculation thread

I'm going to upgrade my wife's phone to the sg3, but when it comes, I'm going to activate it on my account. Will verizon take exception to this?

My wife and I also need phones and were entitled last July. I really want the Note on VZW. We both have Blackberry Storm 2s and mine has gotten very slow and not working as well as I liked.

So, I am thinking about getting the S3 for her, since she is the primary and then switch it to me. I think you save about $50. Then when the Note comes out, I'll get that BUT will I then be entitled to an upgrade or will my wife? VZW screwed me once when I returned an upgraded phone and then left VZW. They charged me $175 and they were never able to straighten it out. Pigs!

Only problem is, if VZW never gets the Note or something like it, I'll have to get a VZW S3. Both of us leaving VZW for ATT (if they get 4G LTE in my areas) is not possible without penalty. The S3 wouldn't be awful but not what I want.

So, if you pay the upgrade fee and get the phone from VZW, you can keep unlimited 4g LTE data for life?

Yes... but you'll likely not want to keep it.

Once the family data buckets go into effect, we get to keep our unlimited data as long as we (a) never again upgrade our phones; or (b) pay full retail for upgraded phones.

Once you get another subsidized phone, it will automatically roll you into the family data bucket and it's unlimited no more. Fortunately for us, that policy has not yet gone into effect, so we're good with the SGS3 update. Not so lucky, I predict, with this winter's offerings.

Considering the extra cost of full retail (on multiple lines in my case), it makes pure economic sense to roll into the bucket and finally lose the unlimited data. It'll cost me another $40/month for 10GB, but it'll cost a lot more to pay full retail for everything.

That's my understanding of the policy.

It will still probably be cheaper paying full retail with unlimited data compare to the extra $40 a month, unless you are paying full retail every few months.

At $40/mo extra, I will be spending an extra $960 over a 2 year period for the 10GB bucket. There is NO WAY I can buy 4 new phones at full retail for that. Even if (WHEN) our kids splinter off onto their own plans, the Darling Bride & I will still get new phones. I get mine one year, she gets hers the next. So we'd likely have to add to the $480 each +subsidized price to get a flagship phone.

So maybe it works out for you to stay on unlimited, it won't work for us I think. It's really borderline on a win/lose. :(

Yeah I forgot I usually sell the old phone and that usually covers about half of full retail so for me it would be cheaper. Then again if the share plans are right I may finally be able to get my parents off their cheap dumb phones and onto smart phones, then with 4 lines on my plan I would have an upgrade ready almost all the time.

Good point, Skeeter, I forgot about selling the old phones. In that case, we would probably break even or better by staying unlimited and paying full retail... bu only if it's the wife & me. Kids want a new phone? They get their own plan :D

Ha yeah luckily through my work I get a nice discount and being the main line only my brother and I have smartphones so usually I can use one of the other two upgrades on the plan if something comes out that really catches my eye.

Hmm, $40 a month is $1,200 for 30 months. Perhaps I should get two S3s now before this new deal starts or at least wait as long as I can like until the day before it begins, in case VZW does get a Note. Is my thinking logical? Is there an expected date when this new deal will begin?

Just pre-ordered the S3 and it gave me the option to keep my unlimited during the online process - no rep intervention required. .

Yes. anyone can buy any phone and keep their unlimited data. Any phone upgrade will keep their data if they order before the (so far unannounced) date of the plan change.

I haven't ordered yet, and will either wait until I can hold the phone in my hands at the store, or I'll order it before any announced plan change date

There's no reason for anyone to rush or panic.

+1

No need to panic.

Wife has an original Motorola Droid and it's virtually worthless (not that she does much with it anyway... she's technologically impaired, bless her heart). She saw the Galaxy Nexus that my son and I are sporting, and the Stratosphere my daughter has. She was like, "well when do I get a new phone?"

Hence the pre-order :)

God this is going to be a rough 30 days or so(hopefully sooner!) ..li am coming back here every hour or two looking for updates everyday now :D

I keep looking at the calendar and thinking I need to stop. Then I get an email from Verizon. It's shipped! No, the email is informing me that my bill is ready.

Yeah, they're awfully quick with THOSE e-mails, aren't they?

This "before 7/9" stuff even prevents us from having a proper countdown clock. Which is a good thing, I guess, considering how many times we had to reset the clock for the Galaxy Nexus...

I'm really confused here:

You would think that the SGS3 would be getting more love and attention here in the Verizon pre-release thread than it is... for such an "epic" phone.

I mean, the thread's been live for 3-1/2 months now and is currently on Page 11 with 539 posts. And the phone's on pre-order.

By contrast, when the Galaxy Nexus pre-release thread was 3-1/2 months old, our page numbers were in the 1400's with over 70,000 posts - and we still had no idea when it would be released!

So is this phone the yawner we're making it out to be? Is it "just another phone"? Are we just that pre-occupied in here?

At least the Verizon thread is not like the other carriers threads

Gotta remember Chief the Galaxy Nexus was also the first ICS device so there was alot more unknown to speculate about then.

Gotta remember that the Gnex thread aligned with the Dinc users upgrade... the stars aligned equaling another epic thread. Next big one will be for the phone release that lines up with Gnex owners upgrade date.

Granted :)

Fair enough. Just making an observation, though. ICS was new but didn't consume our time in that thread.

I guess maybe the SGS3 is a great phone and all, but it's just being released too close to the Nexus and fewer users are in a position to jump on it. I understand Samsung's wanting to release it well ahead of the iPhone-whatever and the Olympics, but a lot of Verizon users are currently locked in with the Nexus.

Especially the more talkative ones :p

The funny thing about Verizon selling the S3 after all the other carriers is Verizon's estimated date may end up being the only date that ends up being accurate and all the other carriers migh be making promises they can't keep if the S3 gets held up at customs.

I sure hope not though, I'm extremely anxious to get my hands on this thing. Have the devices passed through the FCC?

FCC: Verizon and Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 variants complete the circle (Damn you Trent! you posted while I was typing!!!)

It's was reported on the 2nd that VZW's version passed through the FCC. Also, I wonder if this thread is smaller than compared to the Dinc because of the vast choices available. I'm trying to remember correctly but when the Dinc was released it seems the other choices were the iPhone3, OG Droid, and maybe a few others... easy decision. Now there are soo many phones coming out that are pulling people in different directions it will probably be hard to match the numbers for the Dinc.

Ninja'd LOL.

Gnex thread 1776 pages 88756 posts
Dinc thread 959 pages 47904 posts

Next big one will be for the hot rumored phone when the Gnex'ers are up for renewal.

Wasn't the Dinc supposed to be out before the DX, but delays caused it to ship after?

Either way, there have been a lot of DX and Dinc owners move on to new phones already.

Dinc was released April 29th, 2010.
DX was released July 15th, 2010

:)

Gnex launch last Dec lined up perfectly for must of us launch day Dinc owners.
