[Verizon] Removing widgets in apps, widget tab?

JFriedman

I'm brand new to the Nexus, and to smartphones. It's a challenge!

I'm collecting what appear to be thumbnails of web pages I've visited in the Tabs section of the Applications section. There are also assorted webpage banners and shortcuts.

I've tried the press, hold and drag but nothing seems to get rid of them.

Thanks for any help.

You are not collecting. Those widgets come with the apps that are installed on the phone.
I feel your pain though. I use a calendar app called Jorte and it has 27 widgets in the apps/widgets drawer. What are they thinking?
Its the app developer doing a one size fits all package for several phone makers.
I hope someone chimes in here with a way to trim them.

AhHa! I did it!

This is just an example done on the Jorte Calendar App. How it does on other apps is yet to be seen. Some will say just get a launcher that will hide them but I don't want an aftermarket launcher. Don't like em. I like a mean lean machine.

The Jorte app (Jorte-98.apk) had 32 widgets in the App drawer Widget section and 32 references to widgets in the /res/xml folder.

  1. Backed up the current running Jorte.apk Went into my backups folder and found Jorte-98.apk.
  2. Copied it to my desktop.
  3. In Apps/downloaded I cleared its data, forced stop, and uninstalled it.
  4. Used 7-Zip to open the archive and copied the /res folder out to my desktop.
  5. I used Adobe Bridge to browse the folders inside and the last folder in the list "/xml" had 32 .xml files that had the word Widget in the titles.
  6. I deleted them all.
  7. In the archive I deleted the Res folder.
  8. I then dropped the extracted res folder back into the archive and closed 7-Zip.
  9. Used root explorer to drop the jorte-98.apk folder onto my sdcard root.
  10. I tapped it and chose "install". It installed and works perfectly and there are NO WIDGETS in the App widgets section.

How it works on other .apk's is up to how the developer created the program.
