Verizon rep told me 4G data will be $40/mo

So, because the Droid 1 forum has essentially become the "Droid 1 owners who are fed up with their slow phone and want a new phone forum", I figured I'd inform you guys of this: today I passed by the phone booth at my local Costco and asked the guy, who I know very well, about the Thunderbolt. He said they'll be getting it soon (not sure when), but then warned me that the data plan will cost $40/mo. For those of us who want to continue paying $30/mo, we'll have to wait until Mobile World Congress and hope for some high-spec 3G phones.
 
I really hope he is wrong but somehow think he's not.
Not sure I'm willing to pay that much, it's a lot of dollars for a phone (on top of voice and taxes, family plan etc.). Ugh.
There won't be 4g around here for a long while so I will stick w/3g but the day will come...
 
That's how I look at it; maybe for my next phone, in 1-2 years, when the 4G market isn't puny. Hell, I still don't even see 3G everywhere, how can I say that I want to move to 4G, which is probably all but nonexistent?
 
I may just have to eventually root. All I would want is to oc for a bit of speed but it's all Greek to me. No matter how many posts I read it makes no sense to my non-programmer speak ways. We'll see about all that noise though. Another UGH is in order.
 
The Droid is slow rooted and slower unrooted. At least you'll get something out of it. Trust me, it's so simple and nobody's ever screwed up their phone with it. It's literally impossible to brick the Droid.
 
I always thought it was a given that it would be $40/month. If there's any chance that it might actually be the same price of $30 a month, then I might actually consider a 4G phone. I'm due for an upgrade, but I do not want to pay more for 4G when I will never use it. It is true that if you pay for a 4G plan you still get 3G right? Also, correct me if I'm wrong but 4G plans are tiered aren't they?
 
Yeah, that's my other problem with 4G plans. Not only are they possibly more expensive, but they might also not provide true "unlimited" amounts of data. Maybe this is going to tie in with that post I made in this forum about how Verizon is going to throttle their top 5% of users; actually, with 4G, I could see this being a decent system. Better than a hard cap, for sure. This way, 95% of us are happy and they're keeping their network in good shape.

Of course, this is ALL speculation right now, so maybe it's best to wait until the Thunderbolt comes out, which Best Buy says is going to be on Valentine's Day.
 
When I first heard about 4G I was really excited about really fast data speeds. But, having used 3G on my Droid, I can say I'm more than content with it. Occasionally, streaming videos can be choppy, but I'll have to chalk it up to both strength of 3G and the power of the Droid. I'm already being raped enough by Verizon each month that I'm still strongly thinking about moving carriers when my contract is up this summer.

You make a great point. With the Droid on 3G and a rooted ROM, it's pretty satisfying. I use it mostly at work when things are slow. It performs well enough for what it is.

And as far as switching carriers, it's not as if any of the other carriers wouldn't bend you over as well. Pick your poison :mad:
