Root [Verizon] Root my S3

ZooCrazie

Member
I keep reading how great it is to root your phone. I'm wanting to give it a try. This would be my first time ever trying to root a phone. I have searched endlessly on the web and this forum for some type of Beginners guide and haven't had any success.

-A few things I'm wanting to know is what will i need to Root?
-All my contacts , photos etc.... Do i back these up some how and later add them back to my phone?
-Are there certain apps I will need?

Part of me says don't even try it cause you don't know what your doing. The other part says , Yeah you don't know what your doing and never will if you don't get in there and try to learn and experiment.

So Any Help would be great! Thanks

Hello there Zoo!

I see by the info under your name you are on Verizon. Is this still true?
If so, you will want to read the info in the stickies here:
(Verizon) Galaxy S3 - All Things Root - Android Forums

If you have a different carrier, then we can point you in the right direction:)

Some rooting procedures do not wipe any of your data...some do.
The best advice? Read and understand the procedure. If you are not clear on something, just ask:)

Once we know your carrier, I or another staff member can move this thread to the appropriate carriers root forum for ya:)

Mike ,

Thank you very much kind sir for your reply. yes my carrier is Verizon.

The Verizon all things root sub forum is the best place for you then.
Honestly theres like 6(?) Very different models of s3 dependin on carrier/country.
1st things you wana ask though are "why"?
Why u wana root it (im a rooter/flasher lol not some goodygoody)
If you still have warranty, rooting could void it :thumbup::beer:

I need to verify, but I don't think this rooting process wipes any data:
★[8/27] [Casual] [Root, Unlock, Recovery] Vzw S3 Toolkit or 1-Click!! [ALL OTA's]★ - xda-developers

and it's the easiest way to root the S3.

Now, I would recommend you read thru that whole thread. Why, you ask? Well, because you want to know what issues others have run into, and the solutions for those issues. Just in case you run into the same issue, you won't be scrambling for an answer in the middle of rooting.:)
Yes, I know it's 400+ posts but I'll tell ya, when I went to root my first device, I read until I had a headache, but in the end, it was worth it:)
I'm not trying to scare you out of doing it, I'm just preparing you for what may or may not happen.
Once you root and become familiar with the process, you'll smack your head like the V8 commercials and think, "that was so simple" :)

And unrooting is easy too.
Like funky said, rooting can void your warranty, but if done properly, the unroot procedure will bring the device to an "out of the box" condition.

Also, when rooted, you have more "tools" at your disposal to troubleshoot your device if necessary.

Not to mention the advantage of root-only apps.;)

If you ask most, if not all members here who are rooted, they will tell you that every phone they have from now on, will probably get rooted:)

Again, if anything, and I mean anything, does not make sense, please ask. We love to help and will be there for whatever you decide.

If you decide not to root...no worries...that's cool:)

TL;DR---not applicable...read :eek: j/k......we have fun here. :)

@funky.
As far as the warranty goes i'm not sure if i still have it or not. I have had the phone now for almost a year i think???

You ask why?
I say cause I want the most out of my device i can get i suppose. I work out of town a lot and between my phone/tablet/Laptop they are my life lines to home. I'm always intrigued at what i find or learn by simply playing on my phone in its "factory" settings i guess you could say. I want to take that to the next level. I want to experience all that android has to offer. From what i understand. The only way to do that is to remove everything and have it all at your finger tips.

@Mikey.

Thanks for all your help and advice. I will take the time and read the threads and try to understand what I will be getting myself into! It may take me a day or two. Once i feel that i have an understanding i will give it a shot. I'll be sure to keep yall up to date and if I run into any road blocks i'll be sure to drop a question!

*****Another reason for wanting to give this a go is: I kinda want it to be like a test run. I have an upgrade for a new phone any time i want it. I wanna see how this experience goes and maybe give it a shot on my new phone when i choose to get it . I'm debating between the S4 or the Note 3 ...so far the note 3 seems to be winning. I also have a Tab 2 that I would like to root once i can grasp and understand the process :)

Thanks again for the support and help!
now off to reading 400+ threads @!

Hey ZooCrazie (nice avi btw), there's still plenty of development for the S3. If you're looking for a stock AOSP experience it's out there, or if you just want to get rid of all the bloat Verizon puts on the phone, it's out there. Lots of tweaks. I rooted mine the second I got it. :)
The "One-click" root for the S3 is super easy and painless. Just backup anything you might want (SMS, photos etc.) beforehand just in case.
Best of luck!

@bread.

What exactly is the "one click" root and how do you go about doing?

@Mike.

When you say "wipe" my data what exactly do you mean?

*Forgive me of my ignorance*

:(

Whoa, sorry for my delayed response :(
"Wipe data" means basically a factory reset. All contacts/apps you downloaded/texts/settings---will be gone---as if you opened up the box when you first got the phone.

The "One Click" method is the rooting method that I linked a couple posts up.:)
