[Verizon] Rooting & Stock - Questions

Garpa

Lurker
Hello!

I have finally decided to look at rooting because I recently got interested in gaining superuser privileges. (I want to gain toggle GPS function in apps and USB flash drive access and such).

I might also install Jelly Bean, but I try to keep things as "stock" as possible as far as the OS goes and I don't feel like wiping all settings at this point, so I probably will wait for the official OTA.

Anyhow, I did some reading on rooting and got very confused.
Would anyone please answer my questions? :(

1. As far as my understanding goes, If I root, I just simply gain superuser previleges without wiping any data, at which point I can install and use those apps with root-related functions on my current ICS, correct? And I can always "un-root?"

2. If I root and not flash any ROM, then wait for the official OTA Jelly Bean from verizon, will it still be pushed to my device and get updated with no problem?

3. And after the update, will the phone still be rooted?

4. If I root and flash now to the Google's current "leaked" version of the official Jelly Bean AOSP and configure all app & system settings to my liking, is there any way I can retain all those settings when I update to the official OTA in the future?

Thank you in advance!

1. If you root now you will not lose settings or have to wipe anything unless you unlock the boot loader, yes you can un-root.

2. Rooting does not prevent OTA updates unless you delete preinstalled apps.

3. No, unless you use something like OTA root keeper.

4. If you flash a custom ROM there is no need to take the OTA update.
You can use titanium backup for apps and settings.

1. Correct rooting does just that. No need to wipe data or anything.
2. OTAs will still be pushed UNLESS you have flashed a ROM.
3. Phone will *not* be rooted after the update.
4. I would STRONGLY suggest flashing to a stock AOSP version of JB if you want the stock deal. Or flash one of the many great JB ROMS these devs have created. They will be far superior in everything you can do compared to the official JB update. Also Titanium Backup will save all of your apps and messages so that if you do wipe and flash a new ROM, you will still retain all of your junk!

Edit: Gave wrong answer on number 3. Phone will not be rooted after pushing an OTA.
