Help Verizon sim issue caused by reset?

I have a galaxy note 2. Bought a "clean esn" nexus off of Craigslist. Took the sim out of my note 2 and put in galaxy nexus. Booted up fine had voice and 4g.

Person sold to me with his personnel information on it. I did factory reset on device. Noticed no data but didn't think anything of it. Powered off nexus and put sim card back into note 2.

Turned note 2 on and no data and no voice. Seems it killed my sim card. Went to a verizon store and employee unable to get a new sim to work in note 2. Employee calls a number and the person on other end of phones states that note 2 reported stolen 2.5 hours earlier and that my account is locked.

Told them no that I just bought a nexus and it worked with my sim card just fine. Did a factory reset in nexus and now sim not working. That I bought note 2 new out of contract and it can't be listed as stolen.

They did whatever magic and got note 2 working with new sim card. They checked nexus and told me it is good as well and can be activated just fine.

Anyone with any ideas what happened or what is going on? Just a fluke? I have not tried the nexus again but plan on it after hearing some opinions.

Thanks!

only thing I can think of, is if the person you bought the nexus from, somehow picked up that your SIM from your note had activated on his Nexus, and tried to weasel his way into an almost-free note. Only way I can think of that someone would know about your Note, would be if it popped up on his Google account or something. Maybe he called in to report it stolen in hopes that when you showed up to fix it, they'd confiscate it and return it to him, without really looking at it. Thankfully, the reps didn't go that route, not that he would've been able to prove it anyway.

But as for why it seemingly killed it, that one I have no idea on. I'd chalk it up to a fluke, and give it another go.
