Root [Verizon] Some root questions

It seems like there are at least 3 different methods listed above on how to root. I know about 3% of everything regarding root, so that makes me just dangerous enough to totally screw up my phone. With that in mind, here is why I want to root mine.

1. Get rid of the programs Verizon/Samsung mandates are installed that I will never use and slow down my phone.
2. Install a good wireless tehter so I can use my tablet and Ipod. (I still have the unlimited data plan)....

I am fine with the way it looks and feels, so not really overly interested in installing a new ROM or changing things...other than what I already mentioned.

So with that in mind, can one of you wonderful people point me in the direction for a good way to root this so I can do the 2 things above?

I just Did the Odin method yesterday and everything is working 100% ok. Keep in mind you can use Foxfi to tether and this is root free. The non flashing method gave me some issues. So went back to stock and used the Odin method.

Alexander....can you point me to the right link you used for this method?
I did download FoxFi but the stregth to my tablet was bad...I used to use an app called Wireless Tether and it worked great....

ya metafant posted the correct file about 10 posts up. Its called proper. There is a 1click root method out now using the non flash version that gave me issues. But no one else seems to be having the problems.

Thanks....I am not too up to date on all the terminolgy (flashing, kernels etc) but I do know what I want to do. I just want to make it faster by getting rid of the Samsung/Verizon stuff I will never use and hopefully improve the sigal strength...yes I know that the odds of that happening are slim...lol

I am not positive on what the ROM does, so if you have any good information on that....let me know. Thanks for all the help so far.

Basically when you turn on your phone and you look at your screen that's the ROM that came with the phone. To root the phone you are just flashing or installing ( depending on the method) a different version of that ROM onto your phone. To be honest rooting did not give me any better signal or make the phone any faster. My reason for rooting was to eliminate the WiFi notification and auto connecting. I feel this could save some me some battery because it was always prompting me for wifi then connecting.

Flashing means installing a ROM...got it. I know when I did my Droid Eris, every time I turned around there was a new ROM out there....CW Mod was one I remember. So if I flash it, I have to decide what ROM I want....but I can still root it and not effect the current ROM....sound right?

What issues? Did it not work?

1. Root (I recommend the DebugFS method rather than flashing) and install Titanium Backup; this will allow you to freeze/uninstall/backup/restore any app, system or otherwise

2. They are [now] available on the app store

Ok now I'm a lil confused. I bought an s3 and its the updated one with gl1. Where can I get the root method to root my phone with out down grading

Rolo we are way passed that now, the non flashing method worked but for some reason certain webpages were giving me an error cant be displayed it was the craziest thing. I used ODIN to unroot and the I could view webpages again. Re rooted with ODIN and webpages are still fine. Something with that root method. and that brings us to our current conversation regarding the Firmware and screenshots I sent you.

Oh, that's right. You really do need to repeat the issue with the debugfs method before you can blame it though.

No problem. To keep this on one thread with my current set up rooted through ODIN with the root66 and have the older firmware. Should I update to the newest firmware? Or would it be easier just to wait for an updated rom that has this firmware update in it?

I think I am going to go the way of the ODIN method....did you also do the CWD in the second part?

Yes that is very important to make a backup after you root. I presume your referring to clockwork-recovery. you just go to the play store right after it boots and download it.

Rolo...what does that do?...sorry for so many questions. I do try to read as much as possible before asking questions.

This is a clean, rooted updated VZW firmware VRALG1; you flash it with Odin in download mode. This is useful for wiping/reinstalling your phone, recovering your phone (only needs download mode and I don't think anyone can break that), or just updating the firmware.

You can flash it over your current version. Per usual, wipe cache & Dalvik.

I doubt there would be any problems if coming from stock LF2; if coming from a custom ROM, I would nuke everything.

Rolo...thanks. I will read what you wrote a few more times to understand it. I am not as into rooting and changing things like most on here....I just mainly want to make it run better and get rid of the stock apps that I don't want. I know nothing of ODIN, but have heard that a good way of rooting it is going through the thread/link posted in thread #14 above....or the 1 click method in the other thread on this forum.

Dalvik? I am not 100$ I sure I know what that is. I just usually just do hard reset and wipe the cache then flash the new room?
