Root [Verizon] Some root questions

Dalvik cache. Always wipe it when changing ROMs or when your apps/phone acts "wonky". It gets rebuilt on the next subsequent boot (why it takes longer).

My understaning that wiping or clearing the cache is the same thing as the dalvik. Its just not called dalvik in the recovery mode. correct?
 
No. Dalvik cache is a separate thing. It is where your (compiled?) apps are stored so they run faster.

Nevermind, I remembered now my old droid x days you have to go advanced in the menu and its there. Sorry man its been a really long time since I have done this. I rooted my Droid x and kept it running APEX for about 2 years it worked so well for me. Thanks.
 
Ok, I am coming from the Sprint Variant of the Galaxy s3. Rooting and loading custom ROMs through ODIN was easy. What is the newest/proper files for rooting through ODIN 3.07. I am hearing of issues, and was not sure if they have been fixed. If there are issues is there a proper unroot method to take it back to the stock ROM. My Verizon Variant S3 is already on baseband version VRLG1.

I've Rooted my phone and don't want to put a custom tom on quite yet. Can I just install cwm through ROM manager and later flash a kexec recovery?

What does it say/do?
Be sure you're flashing VRALG1-Full.tar.md5.
If it fails MD5 checksum, delete/redownload it.
Note that it takes a while (min or two) to perform the check before you can hit the start button.

Definitely. ROM Manager kept crapping out on me, so I can't trust it. EZ Recovery is the bees knees. I use TWRP2.2 rather than CWM (but I don't know if its compatible with kexec and the like).

im not sure if TW is compatible with kexec...but ive been doing some digging because my current ROM of choice (synergy) is going to be going nightlies soon and including their own custom kernel so i wanted to be prepared...

it seems that CWM 6.0.1.0 is the recovery to go with moving forward...it has built in support for kexec and auto flash so it will auto flash your kernel on every reboot and also supports the flashing of kernels through recovery...for instance Imoseyon's kernel is flashed through recovery (6.0.1.0) instead of any sort of ADB nonsense...it also allows ROM developers to easily package their kernel with the ROM.zip files for a "one stop shop" approach...

ive never used TWRP...so i don't have much experience with it...but from what i understand it doesn't work well with kernels (if at all)
 
That was my [limited] understanding as well.

I ran Synergy 1.4, then 1.5 came out, then 1.6. I can't say I liked them and 1.6 choked when I was "in the field". I went back to rooted stock, figuring I need to actually use stock to get a baseline and then later switch to a custom if stock falls short.

There are some things I love about Synergy but there are some show-stoppers, which will inevitably happen when a ROM gets too customised (hard to account for varying tastes).

I'm trying to decide if I want to invest the time into figuring out how to just make a tailored stock ROM for me and my wife.
 
The correct Tar file is showing on my desktop. when I clicl on PDA to add the file from the desktop. It will not list the tar file as an available file. It shows other items there but not the tar file that is needed before starting.

I can only imagine that you aren't pointing Odin to the same folder that you saved it in (wrong user tree perhaps) or that the file isn't completely downloaded. In Windows Explorer options, uncheck the option, "Hide file extensions of known file types" to make sure there isn't a .part (or something similar) extension hidden.

Screenshots would help too.

VRALG1-Full.tar.md5.torrent IF i delete the .torrent and make the file look like this VRALG1-Full.tar.md5 It will find it in ODIN, but then if you add it it says invalid.

It must be something that I need to do with torrent program (which I am not familiar with)
 
For some reason after I rooted it, I cannot uninstall the verizon apps, kindle, etc. I thought you went through>settings, application manager>all> (then picked the one you wanted to uninstall and it would now give you that option to uninstall like it does for the apps you download from the store)

Also, how did you manage to change the wifi notification?

Nope, need to use an app like Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall them...i suggest freezing...

YES....I saw a post once where it was moved up top with the rest of the buttons like GPS, Mobile Data....etc.

ohhh...

the two things are very separate mods...

First...the Wifi Toggle

youve got a couple options

1. This is for adding the Wifi toggle to the stock toggles
[MOD] [SYSTEMUI] Enable Wifi Toggle / Reconfigure and theme toggles [ICS Blue!] - xda-developers

2. This is for the "15 Toggle" Mod...MUST be deodexed to use this...
[MOD] 15 Toggle Mod in blue for the VZW S3 :) - xda-developers

Now, the other thing...to remove the ongoing notification...PERSONALLY I leave this enabled(even though its annoying)...because there is no other way for the phone to let you know when there is a Wifi network in range...

Yes; I edited the procedure to make it more clear (and not assume everyone knows how to use torrents). Sorry about that.

Install a torrent client (i.e. Tixati) then double-click on the .torrent file; this will begin downloading the Odin ROM. (This is necessary since that file isn't hosted anywhere that I know of).
 
Ok, So I double clicked on the tar file and it opened the Tixati Client. I clicked start. Now it shows it is initializing files, and then goes to download the file. It says 0 of 1,622,118. 0% and downloading. Says it will take ???? (forever)
