Root [Verizon] The boot loader (US VERSION)

Samsung only locked the bootloader because Verizon insisted on it. Don't blame Samsung for this fiasco.

I will hold Samsung equally responsible. They could have told Verizon to shove it when Verizon asked for a locked bootloader. Instead, Samsung agreed to sell people locked phones then announce a couple weeks later than an unlocked version would be sold separately for Verizon customers.

The public perception of Samsung being shackled by Verizon, then doing everyone a favor by selling them unlocked phones, plays right into the business strategy that benefits both Samsung and Verizon.

right...there are two ways to look at Samsung here...

1. The White Knight: The "Developer" phone was their way of throwing us a bone to help offset the practices of VZW
- however if this is the case then VZW are complete scum because if this phone is allowed, why cant we just unlock the ones we have now?
2. The Willing Participant: VZW requests the lock...Samsung goes along with it in exchange for being able to sell an unlocked "Developer" phone later on
- VZW is still scum

Hmmm. Nice bone they tossed us, huh? Still not sure if I would get it.

Going to be some upset devs out there and pre orders being returned over this thing. They should have just announced it at the same time as the "Consumer" version.

Samsung brings out Galaxy S III Developer Edition for Verizon, answers the call for an unlockable bootloader -- Engadget

I am not sure if I am wording this right but can someone somehow take the kernel from the developer edition phone and use that to unlock all the other phones?

I don't think so. One would need the encryption key(s) to do so, I believe.

its not the kernel thats the problem...hell, at this point its not really even the bootloader that is the problem with the SGS3...its the security checks that the phone does to verify that everything is kosher before booting...

all that is REALLY needed is to figure out how to either A. bypass the security checks or B. spoof it

nothing is going to happen tonight, or probably tomorrow honestly...Adam Outler should be getting his phone Thursday and thats when the fun should begin
Can't wait for "Thorsday" (see xda thread)... sounds like he's already gotten some data/info from people that have the phone, and is already getting prepared for his device.

OK, so what path does one take to file the locked bootloader complaint on this FCC site? I don't see anything pertinent to the locked bootloader issue in the initial menu? I also searched the site for locked bootloader and found no results.

From the TalkAndroid article posted above
Select Wireless Telephone > Billing, Service, Privacy, Number Portability and other issues > Online Form. Fill out your information, scroll down, fill out 1 and 2, skip 3 and 4. Then in 5, tell the FCC that your phone

i have to re-read the Block C nonsense again...but im pretty sure if i remember it right that everyone using that as an excuse to get a bootloader unlocked is an idiot (no offense) as they deal with completely different issues

Yeah, the way I see it is if a carrier locks a device down so it can't access the network or features of the network, then this applies. The locked bootloader doesn't prevent users from accessing and using the network and other services, so I think the FCC won't do anything.

exactly...thats how my understanding of the Block C restrictions works...

It was my understanding that they've ready found a method of flashing a custom kernel. Am I wrong?

yes but its not elegant, and its very much not ideal for a daily driver

So is it safe to say well have this thing completely unlocked or should I take it back?

Honestly the safe thing would be to take it back. But I think it will be unlocked.

Now that I have it in my hands though I don't think it will be going back my first impression of this phone is great.

I was really pissed when the first thing I did with the phone was check to see if the boot loader was locked and it was. But I didnt pay anything for the phone only cost me 30 bucks and so far I really like it so I can live with it until we get it unlocked. The 2gb of ram really helps with the verizon bloatware and the other apps.

Found this on r/android. Interesting. This isn't me but figured it was worth sharing. Supposedly a Samsung patch is on the way to remove the bootlocker.

Verizon SGS3 bootloader patch? : Android

Also a screenshot in the email.

I am not convinced and I will not be holding my breath on it. I personally think the rep is referring to the developers edition rather than a patch. Who knows though!
