Verizon to allow full Skype over 3G

This is great for many, but in some situations, the iphone still does have us beat. I travel to canada a lot where I have to keep it in airplane mode or I will get charged boatloads for downloading my e-mail and receiving calls. I use the wifi to chat via google chat and use my email. My coworkers use skype all the time up there because they can use wifi. So even with this announcement, I can already see my Iphone co-workers talking about how theirs is better. It's a shame they didn't make it so that you could use wifi if you wanted.
I think the important of the announcement is that Skype will work even on 3G, and not just wifi. I would think that you could use Skype on wifi, so, you still win over the iphone crowd ;)

One thing - there is a Skype app that I just tried last week, but it required you to have a tel# to also enter...

Well, I was excited. I thought "Skype Out" let you call real phones via skype for free. Now I'm not so excited. Skype Out charges (even if only 2.1 cente/minute). I would rather just use my unlimited long distance and use cell minutes. Even my home phone (Fios) allows for unlimited long distance...I don't get the draw now unless you are a person that has tons of friends/family that use Skype...

(I do see how 2.1 cents per minute would be good for International Calls, but I don't make those calls)...

you think tmo will follow suit.. i hope so!

FWIW, Skype "functions" on both AT&T and T-Mobile's networks...though it suffers from QoS issues on Edge speeds.

I use Skype Out (let's you use your existing cell phone's number as callerID) $3/mo unlimited US/Canada plan. You may never use $3 worth in a month, but its a really cheap way to increase your "minutes" to "unlimited".

There is a "sale" on annual plans, for "Skype online" number, which allows you "inbound" calls from the PSTN, but you're assigned a unique number. It would equate to another $2-$3/mo. in addition to the "Skype Out" costs. But for $5-$6/mo. total, its a viable solution if you have the smallest minutes plan, and looking to move to "unlimited".

Because the iphone app only uses wifi for calls and can not use 3g because AT&T has a sucky 3g network lol. I know the iphone owners can't stand to have something beat their precious phone but verizon just did!

lol yeah it makes sense and yeah you're right about iPhone owners lol

May I suggest the Canadian nationwide plan?
