Verizon update vs Gummy - update or not?

My Droid just said that there's update available. I looked into "more info" and it's coming from VZ.:eek:

I had my phone rooted with GB and now run Gummy. I am fine with it the way it is.;) I am quite concerned that any VZ updates will dump lotsa junk on it.:rolleyes:

Is it necessary to update, or just say screw it and leave it as it is? The only reason, I believe, my Gateway computer ran so well for 6 yrs was cuz I had automatic updates turned off. ;)

my phone runs just fine with GC.

Does anyone know, also, how to turn off automatic updates of this nature? message keeps popping on the screen. I know how to shut it down, but say on my wife's rooted Continuum - she might as well press a wrong button...

Even if you take the update from Verizon for the Droid Charge (after going back to EE4), you can still root it via the normal means and remove the junk from the ROM and get it as clean as you could in the past.

curiosity. will it even update over GC? all I want, honestly, is for that VZ desire to update my phone to go away and leave me alone.
I am "don't fix if it ain't brok" guy.
besides, why do I want to go back to EE4, then root it all again? just because VZ wants to put something on my phone?
seriously, in Windows, you can turn auto updates to off. can it be done in GC?

First of all, GummyCharged 2.0 and 2.1 is based on EP1W which is very very old according to EP4D which is new. Along with the new EP4D version is some very noticeable improvements in stability.

EP1W was very unstable, at least according to EP4D. EP4D is much more stable, faster, and far more efficient. Even stock EP4D runs better than EP1W. Add root to it and get rid of the bloat and it runs ten times better than EP1W.

No, you must go back to stock EE4 before you accept the OTA update. Once you do that, let it install the OTA update.

English, please. That I rooted it twice does not mean I understand and have "know how".
And, once again, I have no issues with phone at all. Pandora freezes once in a while, but that's about it. Also, battery life is much improved with Gummy.

OK, did quick scope in settings.
my f/w version is 2.2.1 not 2.0 or 2.1
baseband version is i510.06 v.ee4
kernel is 2.6.32.9

so what's there to upgrade?

It appears you're running Froyo, Android version 2.2.1.

The rest of us are getting Android 2.3.6, aka Gingerbread.

This is the update that a lot of us in the Droid Charge community have been waiting for... damn, a very long time.

It was supposed to be the version of Android that Samsung should have put on this phone from the beginning but due to the fact that the phone was rushed to market they didn't have a Gingerbread ROM for it so we got stuck with an old Android OS (and all of the problems therein).

Gingerbread was also supposed to be the OS that was to fix all of the issues that the Droid Charge had, including unstable data connections, random data dropouts, random freezes, GPS locking issues, performance issues, etc. All of which the new Gingerbread ROM has done and fixed with flying colors.

though it's very informative, it does not help me. I had GB before I put Gummy on my phone and I prefer Gummy over GB. Can't stop repeating - I do not have any issues described, simply want to rid of that update thing that keeps popping on my phone. I came across multiple issues folks had after VZ update. 6 pages at xda. not really willing to do it.

No way to do what you want, they'll keep forcing it down your throat until you take it. At least, not that I know of. Unless you start hacking away at the OS but then you'd most likely break something.

well, I might just succumb and revert to OEM OS, "upgrade" it, then revert back to Gummy.
no can do anyway, my phone does not connect to pc again. been like this every time. it connects, then is stops, I do something, it connects again, stops again. yes, I do have drivers installed, rooted 2 phones already. go figure.

That's because they are running HumbleROM. At least Danalo1979 has already confirmed that he's working on a new ROM based on EP4D.

GummyCharged... I don't think so. I personally think we lost TeamGummy now that Kejar31 went to the Droid Bionic. That seems to be where TeamGummy (which recently renamed itself to TeamLiberty) is going towards. I've read over on RootzWiki that they may even start developing for the Droid Razer too.

Heck, even AdamTheCashew (whom recently took over development of the Droid Charge) has not mentioned anything on the Twitter feeds that he has plans for a new Droid Charge ROM.

That leaves Humble and TeamInfinity as the only two developers for the Droid Charge that is guaranteed to update their third-party ROMs.

You may very well end up with an unsupported ROM that no longer has the backing of its development team.

it all does not matter. phone is not connecting to PC. usb settings set to mass storage, ran verizon usb for android prolly 5 times by now - no connection. I had same before I rooted my wife's Continuum. Then it changed its mind and decided to connect. W 7. can't do squat.

connected to PC.

good to go.

Noticing a theme here? All of the information you need to do all of this is at one site.

The first time you boot it will take some time to boot as it's building the cache the OS needs to run your apps. If it's sitting at the Droid Eye, you're good.

When you flashed via ODIN, what did it say? Was it successful?

At this point, try the EE4 flash of the ODIN image again.

At this point, get the phone back into Download Mode and do this.

1. Download the Droid Charge PIT File.
2. Get back into ODIN.
3. Check the Re-Partition check-box.
4. Click the PIT button and choose the PIT file you downloaded.
5. Click the PDA button and choose the ODIN image that you downloaded before, the one with the MD5 extension.
6. Make sure you chose the PDA button.
7. Once you're sure you chose the PDA button, click Start.

Your partitions may have been messed up and now we have to get your partitions re-established.
