Root [Verizon] Verizon OTA keeps bugging my rooted G2!

Hello,

So the new 4.4.2 Android is coming at me OTA pretty strong. Its been bugging me the last couple of days, even though I've been putting it off (I choose "later" when it asks me if I want to install it). I have been rooted a long time now -- will I lose root if I download and install this OTA? I'm on a verizon unlimited plan, running Android 4.2.2, software version VS98012B.

If you have the pro version of SuperSU and use it's rootkeeper function your fine as long as you still have stock recovery. Its not a big deal even if you lose it though, ioroot25 works to root 24A.

If you have TWRP or other custom recovery, DO NOT take the OTA, it will soft brick and require TOT/KDZ reflash, which will wipe everything.

Thanks for the replies guys!! :)

I'd prefer not to freeze... I'd actually like to ultimately get the update (even though I've heard some stories about bad battery life and such). You?

I don't know if I have the Pro version of superuser. I have: superuser v3.1.3 (46). At least, that's what the app says. Also says, "elite not installed." I also have the options (checkboxes) for "temp unroot" and "ota survival." Not sure if these means it's the "Pro" version.

I dont have TWRP installed. All I have installed is superuser, titanium backup pro, busybox free, and Voodoo OTA RootKeeper 2.0.3. I originally used ioroot to root the device.

You can "unthaw" with a single button press, that's the idea behind freezing rather than removing apps. It can be undone just as quickly and easily as it was frozen. So if you decide to take the OTA later, defrost the updater app and go for it. That's assuming you haven't used root in any other way to tamper any system files. The most glaring one that comes to mind would be if you installed the modded apk for wireless hotspot. Only mentioned that because you said you were on vzw with unlimited and many folks did that hack early on.

Yes, iowabowtech, I did do that, :) and would like to keep that as well, just do the KK update. what is the best method/steps for me to take, would you recommend?

I flashed Malladus rom to KK last week....... already flashed back to JB...... was nothing in KK that was worth the hassle of setting everthing back up IMO

Yeah, I might flash a different ROM eventually, but right now I'd just like to get the update and keep root.

Like the others, I've been skipping KK in that it seems to bring with it some issues, especially for flashing roms. Even with stock, there's too many reports of battery drain for my liking.

Anyway, when the time comes, you can try to apply the ota over top the modded vzw hotspot provision apk you have installed but it very well might not take. In that event, the stock apk/odex files are linked in that same thread we used originally:

xda-developers - View Single Post - Mobile Hotspot modded to skip provisioning check (VZW)

That's assuming you're still on 11A. I'm not sure if the files are the same for 12B or not.

The other thing to take into account is if you have any xposed modules applied. If so, you can try to undo those. Not sure how that all works in terms of affecting an OTA. Worst case scenario, you may have to use LG Flash tools and the necessary .tot/.dll (or kdz) files to return to true stock if it comes to that.
