Root [Verizon] What's this icon in the notification bar?

What is the icon on the top left? It seems to have something to do with GPS - it changes a little if I completely disable GPS services but most of it still stays there.

Any way to get rid of that? There is a separate icon for when the GPS is actually being used!

...While we're on the topic, is there an easy way to theme that top bar? It looks so much uglier than ICS

I did notice that if I open up Maps or another app that uses GPS this icon goes away and the GPS icon appears instead. would love to know what this icon is

basically you have location service set to on, so any application can access gps.

Thanks dracozny. I wonder if there's anything we can remove (perhaps freeze in Titanium Backup after rooting) that will remove it... I don't think this is an ICS feature??

The GPS icon stays on even if you don't have anything on. It has something to do with the E911. I have no location services on and GPS if off and my icon stays (it doesn't have the airwaves, just a circle).

are you sure it doesn't have something to do with wifi? the phone searches for wifi regardless of whether or not you have wifi on....so I was thinking it could be an icon for that?

regardless what it is (it is GPS related as shown with the pic from the manual) its stupid and unnecessary...it just doesn't need to be there

So what you guys are saying is that you wouldn't want emergency services to be able to locate you if, for example you were shot and bleeding out and somehow managed to dial 911 but then passed out unconscious or were unable to ask for help?

Or are you cool with the function, but just don't want the icon always showing up?

Cool with the function, don't need the icon there. Every phone has E911 by default but as far as I know this is the only one that feels the need to constantly remind us that it's there by cluttering up our notification bar. It would be like having an icon informing us that our screen is currently on. We know.

I had the same icon on my eris and even on my non android phones so I have no idea why this is new to anyone..

All the custom roms I have run in the past take that icon out of the pack. It is still on just the icon is gone. I think it is part of the framework but other than that don't know.

But for sure you can edit it out with it still being on.

Use ninjamorph from the market, create a project with system/app/SystemUI.apk, remove stat_sys_location_on_2.png and stat_sys_location_e911_2.png in res/drawable-hdpi, finish the project, and then reboot your phone.

You need root, obviously.
