This is the first phone I am going to attempt to root. My question is should I update/add the usb and Samsung drivers before I go into fastboot or when I am in fastboot?

Are you using a guide to root? I'd advise doing so and read through it well so you understand what you are doing. Makes it a lot less stressful for some
I used mskips guide @ xda it took all of 15 minutes.
He now has a root toolkit as well which simplifies it. There are several ways to root gl!

I am definitely using a guide. I have been following SA's guide on this site. I will check out mskips as well. Thanks for the tip!
