Reception update? Could you post a link where you read this?

If it is the kernel dated July 4, it has done nothing to improve 3g. I mention only that, since 4g and call reception are already very good. 3g shows good to great signal, but results do not always back it up. 3g performance is mediocre to good, IMO. 4g on the other hands rocks real hard.

The blue 32 I have has an "updated" sticker and new kernel. Are we assuming reception is bad then? I have used the Gnex and know the Gnex. The GS3 is no Gnex.

Added: Must admit I would gladly trade some of the amazing 4g performance for a little more 3g. Balance the scales some :)

Droid 2 and especially 3 have amazing 3G reception. Both the GS3 and Razr are second to those. Heck, all devices are for 3G. Droid 3 is king of the hill. My family still uses the D2 and D3.

That said, I respect your experience, but could not in any stretch emulate your results. From my eight month use of the Razr, if the GS3 is horrible, then so is the Razr.

you can't compare the SGS3 to anything from the Moto Droid family...because they are Motorola's...Motorola could have an engineer crap in a box and it would get better reception than any other company's phones...

im really hoping i dont regret my SGS3 purchase when the RAZR HD drops...

My point is the Razr had good reception for me and so does the GS3.

HD perspective:

Similar display tech to GS3
Ditto on main chipset
Fixed 2530 mah battery
Fixed navigation bar taking up display space

Loved my DX, but it's pretty clear after living with the GS3 for 2 weeks that it's reception is superior to the DX in every way. Hanging on to calls, call quality, 3g, and better than the DX in fringe areas.

Wifi, so far, seems about equal.

no way...myself and 2 other friends have upgraded from DX's to the SGS3...reception quality for all of us has dropped...

of course in response to your situation i would say it SHOULD be that way...i would think hardware two years newer should perform better...

I'm not sure if it's because I had the Galaxy Nexus or what but I have no problems with signal! I never lose my data nor even go down to 3G. I can hold a call anywhere, and there's no one way audio issues. I almost think everyone should have had a Nexus to appreciate signal afterwards.

i think some people are misinterpreting what im saying...signal strength is not POOR on my GS3 at all...ive yet to have a dropped call or any similar issues...its just not as good as my DX

I owned a DX myself too, granted just for a few months right after it came out. It wasn't bad, but I don't remember the signal being out of this world.

Do the bars matter that much?

I know mine doesn't get fantabulous 4G in the house all the time, but I do know the first time I made a call, my interlocutor said "Wow, you sound a thousand times clearer." So I'm not going to get hung up on bars.

However I am getting hung up on the fact that in a very low-signal area that I'm in every week, the phone ramps up the power to the radio so high that it drains the battery and heats up rather extremely instead of just dropping the signal. My Droid X just gave up under those conditions, which is my preferred behavior....

I had the Razr Max before returning it in anticipation of either the Max HD or the Sammy S3. I see little difference in reception between the Razr & the S3. It's very good.

Yes, I've had some data drops, but I got those too with the Razr in similar spots.

From a build stand point, true dat.

Added: Motto does however seem to have become a fan of the big bezel in order to make devices thinner. The irony is the total volume footprint is the same as similar devices. Moto is counting on folks being two dimensional for "thin".

Case in point, the 4.3" display Razr is the same width as the 4.8" display GS3. That is significant and also forces Moto to put the usb on top, which is awkward for the user.

This thread has strayed off topic. If you wish to discuss the GS3's signal reception for the Verizon variant, please do so here: http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s3/577873-verizon-gs3-signal-reception-thread.html

Any further off-topic replies will be moved to that thread or cause this thread to be locked until more information on the Verizon variant OTA is known.

Thanks for understanding!

To stay on topic, has anyone received the ota yet? Does anyone know an official list of what was included?

My S3 went back due to poor 3G and data dropout. Back to my DX for now. Perhaps if the reception was better, I'd go Sammy developer version in green. I'll see after the OTA has been out for a bit.
