Video Chat?

What's the best way to do video call? Say for example my mother (uses a droid 2 on verizon) wanted to do a video call how would I go about getting us both setup?

There are so many options! find out what she has apps installed on her droid 2 and use that. If she doesn't have any, there's fring, tango, iMovicha and soo many more video calling apps. you might have to try more than one to decide which one fits you the best (easiest to use and best quality).

as a side note, make sure your mother has an unlimited data plan or is on wifi, video calling eats up data and the tiered data plans on verizon will kill her in overages.

Some will work over 3G but the quality usually suffers a bit. Im hoping someone figures out how to make Skype work with this phone as I really likes being able to use it on my EVO when they unlocked it for that. I currently am running all over the CA and lugging my laptop around is not fun. At the same time my girl friend is in Korea now and we dont always have the opportunity to talk when my laptop doesnt have a connection.

Best thing is to use google talk video chat but the current version of google talk on the photon does not have the video chat support. Good news is that it is a known issue and Motorola is going to provide a fix in the maintenance release.

Skype is widening its support -

Skype - The Big Blog - Skype 2.1 for Android enables video on majority of Android devices

Previously, VillianROM grabbed Skype 2.0 and simply turned off the blocks in the table of known devices, causing that to work for a great many people.

Phandroid went right to the source - Hacked Skype 2.0 Comes With Even More Device Compatibility – Download Here

Note: Uninstall any previous Skype before attempting this install.

I grabbed the one from VillianROM - rev 2.0.0.45, signed, same as Market version - works great on the Evo 3D -- so one of these may work for the Photon, it's worth a shot.

So according to skype the Photon does not meet the requirements for video chat which begs the question how does a dual core phone with 1 gig of ram and 4G capabilities on the latest software not meet their requirements?

By not having the hip bone connected to the leg bone - or - a matter of connectivity through software and up into hardware.

They had originally defined this for a few types of smartphones and then built a permissions table (listing lots of stuff for future expansion) but with most all of them turned off.

VillianROM simply disassembled the app - set all permissions for all phones on - found it worked for his Sammy phone, and then just put it out there for the rest of us to give a go. That's the 2.0.x hack that I'm using myself.

Just days ago, Skype tries to make this look like something happened by releasing expanded support in 2.1 - all they did for that was check on a few more permissions.

If the Market Skype 2.1 isn't working for you, try the hacked version linked from Phandroid.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to wait for a rev that connects the hip bone to the leg bone. ;)

We have to wait as VRom doesn't work either. It's frustrating for me since I'm on the road alot and the person I talk to most is on the other side of the planet from me.
