MoboPlayer has played any video format I've thrown at it, however.
I found this-

What specifically are the encoding instructions for my LG Optimus V? I'm not interested in using some third party application that takes up phone space and I usually have issues with. I would prefer just converting the videos into the best format.

My Handbrake settings for Optimus V - Widescreen video (16:9 or wider):
Container = mp4
Picture Tab:
Width = 800
Height = 448
keep aspect ratio = checked
Anamorphic = none
Modulus = 16
Cropping = custom (0,0,0,0) (you might need some cropping, check video or use Automatic)
Video Filters Tab:
Everything is off (if your source video is interlaced, you may wish to deinterlace or Decomb)
Video Tab:
Codec = h.264
framerate = 29.97
2-pass = checked (personal preference)
Avg Bitrate = 700 (personal preference, a good balance)
Audio Tab:
Audio Codec = AAC
Mixdown = Stereo
Samplerate = 48
Bitrate = 96
DRC = 0
(make sure you select the correct "source" in the pulldown and don't forget to click on "Add track" button to populate the audio track in the list at the bottom)
Subtitles Tab, Chapters Tab,
I never add subtitles or chapters to my portable media files (let's face it, Android is incapable of doing anything with "chapter" markers anyways at this time)
Advanced Tab:

Additional note about width/height/aspect ratio ...
- Any time you drop a video into handbrake for encoding, if the aspect ratio is maintained, I usually set the width and then the height will auto-adjust as you dial in other settings.
- If I'm encoding 4:3 ratio video, I alter the "width" to 600, to make sure that the resulting height of the video does not exceed the phones hardware acceleration limits.
- If you're using my settings from the post above, for say a standard DVD, then your max horizontal resolution will likely be limited to the max rez of the source DVD video, usually 720.
Oh, and one last note, as you get started with use of Handbrake, make sure you use Handbrake's "preview" feature to create a 30 second encoded test file, then check it on the phone. No sense in letting an older, slow computer work for hours on a video file when you forgot to add in the audio track.

Unless the intention is to retain full resolution of the source videos for playback on a large screen TV, there doesn't seem to be a need for setting the resolution width to the full 600/720/800. This only creates a larger file size requiring more SD storage space plus file transfer time, and more processing burden on the OV, without any additional video quality improvement during playback on an OV. I just set my conversion width to 480 for WS, or height to 320 for FS, which is the maximum screen resolution for the OV. The picture quality is more than satisfactory for my viewing. FYI.

In the settings I posted, resolution has no impact on filesize.

Sure it does, just try using the different width or height settings and looking at the resulting video file sizes generated by Handbrake.

Well, then, just out of curiousity, what do you suppose the "bitrate" setting does?

I use the default Handbrake bitrate setting of 'Constant Quality'. Once the bitrate is altered, then the video quality would be affected with possible frame dropping which would be observed as video glitches when viewing.

Gotcha. Use whatever settings you wish, just keep in mind that anyone following my original guide will not see any filesize benefit from reducing the video width/height.
