No need to convert anything. Download a video player from the app store, like mxplayer, and then you can either transfer files from your pc via usb or via sdcard. I usually make a folder on the external sd card called "video" and then move all the vids there. Players like mxplayer already have the codecs needed to play avi, mkv, mov, m4v, mp4, etc...

At least this is how I have it set up with my S2. Can't imagine it would be much different on the S3.

Official specs say: DivX, H.263, H.264, MPEG4, VP8

If you want/need to convert to one of these native formats I love Format Factory.
It also converts audio, pictures, and ROM devices along with other tools.

It plays much more than those by default, but for things with DTS audio and that require software decoding you'll still need MX Player and Dice Player (for me neither is quite perfect, so both stay for now).

I have had zero issues playing mkv, avi, mp4 or m4v files with mxplayer on my S2.

Is the mxplayer on Google Play? I couldn't find it. Please explain.

I use VLC on my laptop which can play any video format. But unfortunately, they are dragging their feet on the Android version. :(

No DTS audio now in MX Player, also hardware decoding causes audio drop out when the audio codec isn't supported by the stock player whereas Dice can manage software audio with hardware video. Both are nearly perfect, but neither is quite perfect, so I change between them depending on the video.

Is MX Player only available for ICS or something? I have the Galaxy Tab 10.1 with Android 3.2, and I cannot find this app on Google Play. That typically means that the app is not compatible to my device and therefore it does not show up. Is it true?

That can happen if the developer hasn't included support for your device (yet). I'd imagine there would be an apk kicking about out there that you could download and install on your device. Just Google 'mxplayer apk file' and see what comes up.
Shout back if you need more help though

I have the latest update for mxplayer and have run into no errors thus far. Haven't loaded an mkv file since the update though, only avi files. Will have to check and see. If this is the case, guess I will have to look for another video player.

No. I have the Galaxy Tab 8.9 on stock Honeycomb 3.2. Typed in mx player and came right up in the google play store.

Just for good measure, i went on my ipad2 and went to the google play store online and did a search, and it came right up. Also went on my S2 on GB 2.3.6 and found it. Finally, went on my Touchpad running ICS 4.0.4 and found it. That covers every Android OS version and type of device since OS 2.x, including online. Not sure why you can not see it?

Oh, cr@p. The latest Dice Player update has removed DTS support because of licensing issues too!

Time to back up your old apks chaps!

Didn't MX player did that. I also am a full-fledge vlc guy on the computer. So when it wasnt there for the phone, i just thought there was nothing else. I used to change all .avi to mp4 for my EVO4G. Glad to know this now.

By the EVO4G and android 2.3.5 only still. Am able to find mx player in the market. So maybe you typed it wrong, search it again
