Video Out via 3.5mm Headphones Jack?

You can clearly see in the pix on the above post that there are three separate sections on the 3.5mm side. The phone would have to provide 2 audio and one video signal (basically 1 signal for each section). Clearly the Evo lacks the video output signal or else Htc would have touted to have such a feature on their phone. Since it physically lacks the physical video out hardware no amount of software can change that.

I still disagree. Yes, perhaps for a 3-mode cable, you're right. But you could still pass a video signal over any one of those, even if there are just two (we know there's at least 2 since it supports headphones). It could be 3 if it supports mic in, but I don't believe any of the phones do at the moment. Mic in in theory is different because it goes backwards, but I still believe video out would be possible - all you need is a single digital signal and an app to produce it. You might need to root (depending on API set) but it should still be possible.

If it was as simple as a software change than any pc or mac will have that capability built in right? They all have audio out and are certainly more capable than the EVO. I have yet to see anybody output video through the headphones jack on their computers.

Don't be too quick to jump to conclusions. I think that most macs are able to achieve this right out of the box. More specifically the mac mini I am pretty sure has it built in, and I know for sure that the newer ipod and ipod touch come with it. Apple has appeared to have noticed that it is a table feature for a number of their devices. I'm not advocating their company or products, just trying to show you that you might be too quick to judge. As far as other computers go, it is not really necessary to have so why have it?

It is absoulutley not possible, although judging by the other posts stating just that are being ignored, I don't see why mine will help.

The actual jack would have to be designed to do video, which is more expensive to produce than just an audio jack because of an additional insulator. Assuming HTC did select the more expensive three conductor jack for the EVO, they would then have to route the video to the jack. Now don't you ask yourself, if they went to the trouble of making the hardware capable (the hard part) why wouldn't they adjust the software to take advantage (the easy part) and market that feature. I just don't see them making that mistake.

That is because it was provisioned for it natively hardware wise. Their iphone has no such provision. No amount of software is gonna help it.

Has anyone actually tried using such a cable on their Evo?
The early video IPods originally had this feature and it was not touted by Apple at all until after third party companies started selling the cables marketed for the ipod.

Again, it wont work. There is no video data going to the 3.5mm jack, and the jack doesnt have the extra ring to support that cable.

Nope - I've got two of them. The audio out supports copper stereo or TOSLink mini - that's it.

I have been using the 3.5 to RCA audio out (white & yellow) with the audio out for my Jeep rear entertainment center to get audio from my Evo to the vehicle system. (No aux in) 3.5 to 3.5. Works great and even better now with the audio tweaks from the Netarchy kernel. However, the 3.5 to full video-audio out looks like an absolutely awesome feature on the Epic. (The grandkids can now watch movies in the backseat Yay!!!) IMHO it is probably the only one up I've been able to see (by specs) over the Evo.
