Video recording: Judder, framerate, bitrate

Hi all,

Just a quick few q's about video recording on the Galaxy S3.

Recording video on my GalaxyS3 has become fairly regular. You can record up to 1080p. Sweet.

However, even with image stability turned on, I'm still finding some occassional judder. Now, I'm not expecting broadcast quality, but it would help me, to find out why it's happening, if nothing more, than just to understand the deeper mechanics of video recording.

I have a variety of videos, varying lighting conditions, image complexity, colour makeup etc. But I get that wee niggle when I watch my video playback (on PC AND phone) when I see the judder.

Why the judder?
I made this thread just to open it up a bit and see what other people's thoughts are on it.

Is the MicroSD card to blame? (Write speed), or maybe it is too full? and android is writing to it slower? I bought the fastest MicroSD 64GB I could find.

Perhaps it is more due to limitations of the recording function/compression method on this device (MP4). Though we can't exactly call the S3 hardware slow.

Uploading to YouTube:
I have to applaud YouTube for it's image-stabilising feature, although it appears slightly un-natural at times it does make it very pleasant to watch. But of course, YouTube will (at present) always cap your framerate at 30fps and add compression artefacting. (the S3 does not go above 30fps anyway so this isn't a concern for me), but the compression is a shame.

Still I am just keen to find out what is causing the slight, occasional judders.

Looking ahead, the modded Camera APK:
As an aside, I've been considering upgrading to the modded Camera APK, which lets you record at 30mbps bitrate (1080p), currently it is limited to 19mbps. Has anyone here done this and can they speak of it's results?

There must have been a good reason why Samsung limited it to 19mbps, maybe it's to conserve battery, maybe it's a concern linked to the potential scenario of users uploading to the net, maybe high-end MicroSD cards cannot write this quick?! (unlikely).

Basically, I'm just looking to hear from anyone about their video recording impressions on the S3 with regard smoothness, bitrate.

regards.

Im a total lamen to video stuff but could it maybe be the image stabliser thats causing the "judder" mate? Like have you tried without it?
