Root VIDEO Tutorial on how to Root an Acer Iconia A500/501 from Stock 3.2

Hello C4Eva, I finally downloaded it
(the speed here is so slow, it took many hours to download..)

Okay, now I'm trying to repeat from here.

- I copy the file to my sdcard root folder
- I rename it to update.zip
- I turn off the tab, and turn it on again with pressing down volume button
- Clockmod showed up, and I choose
1. "install zip from sdcard"
2. "apply /sdcard/update.zip"
3. "Yes"
- But, the result is Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (bad) Installation aborted

Hmm, any steps I missed? I try to unzip the file and it seems right, I can open it.

Check what is inside the zip file, is there another zip file?

Check the size of the file from the site and check the size of the file that you have downloaded

Next I am uploading a video on how to install roms and what else you need to wipe... follow that if you have any issues.

Nope, inside the zip file is folders like "calibration, data, EC, META-INF, system" and files like "apkinstaller.temp, boot.img, flexrom.img, etc".

File size is exact.

What do you think if I try using the unstable ROM back, then I try again using the A501 ROM? Do you think it's dangerous?

Thanks. Will wait for your video bro :)

Just to confirm, you are placing it on the micro sd right?

And are you selecting "install zip from sd card" or "update from sd card"

Cursed4eva

Yes I did place it on my external micro sd card.

And I selected install zip from sd card, it failed. I did try select update from sdcard,
and it's still the same.

try downloading a diff rom, just to test it, go onto xda developers and a500/a501 section, get a rom that you like, and try installing it

Cursed4Eva

If you are unable to find it let me know ill send you another link

Just to confirm too,

have somebody tried and report this ROM that I downloaded? Is it working well with them?
(TLSS_A501_3.2_Little_Honey.zip)

Downloading another ROM will gonna be "time-consuming" for my condition right now, I just hope this ROM will works. I will still try to looking on another ROM, even I don't really understand. hehe.

Thanks bro Cursed4Eva :)

If it didnt work try this one bro...

[ROM] Falcon Acer A501 4.015.01 & 4.031.24 & A500 7.006.03 [HC 3.2][CWM&root] - xda-developers

Since you said you dont understand let me try to explain it to you

ROMs are versions of the operating system that are edited/modded by various developers

Sometimes ROMS are left as close to stock roms as possible with the exception of just being rooted (like the one in my link for the a500)

Sometimes they are heavily modded like the latest video I have uploaded (THOR ROM)

To give you an example...

There is an app called QUADRANT that measures the performance of devices by giving it a value... The Stock Acer Iconia scores about 1600-1700 whereas the THOR ROM scores 3000+ (well unfortunately the thor rom is not available for a501)

So once you are rooted you can choose to install any version of the firmware(ROMS)

Watch my latest tutorial (that should be uploaded in about 2 hours from the time of this post) to understand how to play with ROMS, switching between them without losing any data... Once you learn and start doing this... you are never going to stick to the stock rom again.

Sorry to have gone on and on... just trying to explain :)

Hope I helped

Hi,
I really like your video and I think I would be able to root my Iconia with your help, but the reason why I want to root it beacause it cannot see my SDcard. Now here comes the problem, how else can I root based on your video if the external Sd card is not working.
(I tried formatting with android phones, SD card formatter, put it in android phone and unmount properly, still nothing)
I have spent now about 3 nights trying to figure out different methods but nothing
Please someone help me out...
Thanks

Unfortunately you will not be able to format without the sdcard
1. Try accessing the sdcard via astro filemanager
2. You say you formatted with android phones which means your sd card gets detected with android phones and its not at fault.
3. In that case do a factory reset of the acer iconia a500 and try again, you will lose all data but the sd card should then work
4. If it still doesnt work that means there is a problem with your sd card slot, contact the service center, acer service is usally good and if its less than a year old they will get it done for free.

Hope I helped

Thanks for being so quick.
Yes the card (I tried even different cards) work fine on any other devices.
I tried hard reset as well (is this from the menu>>Privacy>>Factory data reset???), no change at all.
Astro did not help either (it just show that there is no content avail.)

The only thing I do not get is that as far as I can remember the first time it was ok, I am not sure why it went wrong.
Is there a way to tell the Iconia to boot from the USB, or from a PC?
Because the USB port works fine and if I could choose where to boot from....

I might call Acer anyway see what they say.

Thanks

Bro since you seem to be under warranty, i dont see any point in working with a busted sdcard slot... if the factory reset didnt fix it, i dont think theres much else we can do... contact acer get it fixed and once thats done, well have it rooted :D

Hope I helped

To Cursed4Eva,

my Update for my Root Adventure.

I'm finally rooted my Acer Iconia A501... Yes you right, try another ROM and it will sure good. I haven't tried your link, and I tried this one :
[Rom] [30/12/2011] Moscow's A501 3.2 Alexandra II Rev4 OC/UV - xda-developers

And it's well done. The 3G works (the most important things), I have superuser, and some app that I still don't understand, hehe.

Thanks a lot for your support bro Cursed4Eva, I appreciate that :)

Btw, if maybe I have something wrong with my tab, and then I want to go service it, am I must root it back to Original Acer ROM to keep my warranty? And where can I find the ROM?

@markovacs
Can your flashdisk read? I have tried when I put my flashdisk plugged, and I did Clockmod Recovery, it didn't read my SDCard, but my flashdisk. And I can choose the ROM file inside my flashdisk too. I can't guarantee it on A500, I think C4Eva knows better :)

I am having a similar problem with getting through the initial stage. I copied the update.zip file to the root of the external sd. Then I hit the Volume down and power button. I get the initial text as I should but result in the android guy with the yellow triangle. I am not seeing what I am doing wrong.

Any help?

Link 1 right, i am guessing you renamed the file you downloaded to update.zip, dont do that, unzip the file you downloaded and you will find a file named update.zip, copy that over and youll be good to go bro :)

Dont worry I made the same mistake the 1st time I tried too ;)

Hope I helped :D
