Help Videos not playing from SD card?

rickGamer

Lurker
I'm having problems playing videos off of the SD card on my Galaxy S2, at first I thought it was a problem with the actual video files but then I tried putting them on the internal memory which worked so I know now that it's the SD card that's at fault, every time I try playing a video from a file that's on the SD card I get a 'file not supported' error, any idea why this happens and how I can resolve it? Would backing up the files on the SD card then formatting the card work?

A little more info: I'm not very technically minded and so was hesitant about rooting my phone even after having so many different people telling me I should, so in the end I ended up following a tutorial on Youtube, I tried adding the link but because this is my first post I couldn't, but if you put 'How to Root Galaxy S2! [NEW][i9100]' into Youtube it's the first video.

That worked for me but I have done nothing more than that.

Hello and welcome to Android Forums! :)

Do you know what class your SD card is? Most phones work best with class 6 or higher for streaming media.

Hi and thanks for the welcome, I am not sure what class my SD card is, is there some way to find this out? I've checked the site where I bought it (Amazon) and couldn't find any info on the class of the SD card there either?

Edit:

After looking through the reviews someone stated it's a class 4 card.

So is this a problem then? I have got videos to work on the card before but it seems that over the last day or so they have stopped working, I've only had the phone a week. I went through the tutorial of rooting it last night which seems to coincide with the problem, do you think it's related?

If the video plays from internal memory, but not the SD card, I would definitely look at the card as the problem. You said you got videos to play from the card before, were these the same videos that won't play now?

You might also want to try a different media player. I have had a lot of success with Mobo Player.

Yes they are the same videos as before that I tried and are not working any more on the SD card. I have now tried backing up all the stuff on my computer and formatting the SD card then transferring everything back on and putting the card back into the phone, but now I have another frustrating problem, it keeps saying 'scanning media' it's been doing this for about 20 minutes and wont let me access my gallery or music any more, I do have another SD card, only 2GB but maybe it's worth trying that out to see if I have any problems with that?

Did you format your card in the phone? If you used your PC you have to remember to make sure it's FAT32. It could also be an indicator of a failing SD card.

I'm starting to wonder if it's the SD card too, I've tried formatting the card on both the computer and on the phone but still I'm getting the same problems, I only got this card a week ago brand new so it's strange that it would fail so quickly. Maybe it's the class of the card as you said before, I've found a class 10 card which I'm tempted to get but I'll try another card I have first top make sure that's it's the SD card.

Also thanks for your help so far, I really do appreciate it :)

UPDATE:

So I've now started using my old SD card (2GB) and it's working perfectly, the videos I've transferred are working flawlessly without any problems and so is the music as I was having a little trouble getting some to play before with the other card.

So it looks like you were right Lunatic, it does indeed seem like it's a dodgy SD card, guess I'm going to have to get another one. Again I appreciate the help as I was pulling my hair out over this ;)

If you got the card online, there has been a rash of counterfeit class 10 SD cards that turned out to be class 2 (five times slower and much cheaper). It was usually reported in 32 GB cards, although I wouldn't be surprised if they did that with 16 GB cards, too.

I got a 32GB Kingston of the net and had lots of problem with it. I think it was defective and speed was certainly quite slow, closer to Class 2 speed.

After that got a SanDisk 16GB. It didn't specify what class it was on the packaging. So after a month, I passed by the store and ask them. They checked their records and they noted their stock was Class 4. Anyway, the microSD card works fine so far, so I guess Class 4 can still work.

That said, I've heard that genuine SanDisk tend to be faster than their stated class anyway.

Cheers

Hi im having a similar problem. My videos played fine until i started using the u torrent app and changed the download location to my 64 GB sd card. I don't know why but the change somehow corrupted the videos in the download section+ cod black ops zombies which i pasted the obb files onto the sd card started saying application not installed. I tried un mounting the sd card, taking it out physically and rebooting the phone but nothing helps. However my mp3 files seem fine and play fine. Any help would be appreciated.
