Vidoe Chat with PC using front facing Camera

DMan911

Lurker
I have been having an awful time finding a video chat program that utilizes the front facing camera on my Samsung Droid Charge that will allow me to chat with someone on a PC. Does anyone have any suggestions? Remember its from phone (using the front facing camera) to a PC. If anyone knows of an app that will allow this, please let me know, and provide hints if possible how to make it work.

Thanks.

Nothing currently. Skype will allow this if and when it comes to the Charge. Currently, Fring, Qik, and Tango work albeit lousy. (compared to Skype or FaceTime)

oovoo is a great app that lets you do this. I have been using it with my personal desktop for years. So much better than skype. Quality is tons better and allows you to conference for free up to 3 people. 6 people for a fee.

I would have to say yes. They probably havent updated it yet on the website. Two weeks ago it was not compabitble and when I went to install if from the market it let me download but when I went to run the app it said it was not able to do video chat only phone calls. Last Monday I got an request to update and since then have been using the video chat feature. It is in the market and can be downloaded.

They've added "Samsung Charge" on the description of the app in the market.

Thanks! Exactly what I was looking for. Now I just have to convince everyone to open an account :)

So it looks like Skype is available for video calls now with the update...however...they are claiming that only Gingerbread allows the use of the front facing camera. They say it will work with your phone on Froyo, but only back facing camera is available. I confirmed that Skype now allows a video call on the Charge, and sure enough, only the rear facing camera view is shown.

So the question is, why can Oovoo and others access the front facing camera with Froyo on the Charge, but Skype cannot? Is this a case of others actually customizing the app for the various phones utilizing the OEM APIs whereas Skype is using a general Android API that only exists in Gingerbread? Seems like a lazy approach.
