Viewsonic G-Tablet review UPDATE

If after flashing new version it boots and then seems to keep getting continual FCs on different apps it's likely because you didn't flush your davlik cache so it's full of cached versions of older version now mixed with new... usually just flush cache and reboot will clear that problem up as will rebuild cache from scratch (much longer first boot) and then everything matches the new version and should run cleanly...

That's assuming if he has clockwork installed, right? If he doesn't have clock installed, if he can get to the settings, will a factory reset clear the davlik cache?

I hope everything turned out ok, trip.

Okay I just got this thing yester day, is there anyway to put games on it? if so how? some one help me, please.

You really need to get some custom firmware on it before you can get anywhere with this thing. go do XDA.. they have a section devoted to the G-tab. there are 4 diff roms you can try. TnT Lite seems to be the most stable so far.

Since you don't have the actual google market, you will have to side load apps to get them on your G tab if u decide not to root and/or install a custom rom.

I dunno, this seems like a lot of trouble and hackery to try and get a working tablet.

This review wasn't exactly kind to the software

I'm still thinking the Archos 101 is my best bet.

This is several weeks ago. Out of box the device sucks- no doubt. It blows the Archos away though with TnT Lite 2.20, also no doubt :)

Over twice as fast. No contest and absolutely no exaggeration. This is compared with Archos 101 and 2.2 just released for it.

LOL joy quickly turns to frustration and disappointment as every application now simply crashes, and upon reboot, an endless wave of crash pop-ups fills the center of the screen!

Could really use some help here guys!

XDA gtablet site is best place for help.

If you outline your problems they will show you. There are also links. Seems like you may have installed a rom without first clearing the cache and data (perhaps like I did before too).

Easiest way to fix for me was (I had same issue on earlier rom):

1. Download "Clockwork .8" (links at XDA)
2. Plug Gtablet into computer with USB and activate USB storage
3. Unzip the file so the recovery directory and update.zip are in the root of the internal storage.
4. Turn off usb storage (once you make sure the recovery directory and update.zip are there)
5. Power down the Gtablet
6. Turn back on with power and volume up
7. Clockwork should install
8. Power down and restart the G tablet
9. Download TnT Lite 2.20
10. Repeat 2 and 3, but this time extract the update.zip file from TnT 2.20 and copy over the update.zip already in the root directory. YOU WILL NOT NEED A RECOVERY FILE FOR THIS METHOD.
11. Delete the recovery file in the root directory
12. Power down
13. Restart by pressing power and volume up
14. Should be in Clockwork
15. You want to clear both cache and data (two options on main screen)
16. After clearing both, choose install update.zip.
17. The next screen will show the update.zip. Go to its row and choose it by pressing home button

You should auto reboot and be set. You can then install the Folio Flash apk and install Titanium so you can do the market fix.

This is what I did to update with a previous rom. TnT 2.20 is the most stable rom and 2400 Quadrant scores are matched by the speed of the device.

This rom is what VS should be updating with (but are not).

Sometimes works, but depends on what was done prior.

No question Clockwork is the way to go, since easier to recover and can even hook up to USB storage if the device messes up. Also, you can do a full backup of the rom, so if anything goes wrong in future, simply restore the rom you saved.

Also easier to clear data and cache.

BTW, I am not a code guru. Just as in the dark as some others may be here :) I just read instructions VERY carefully and will STILL sometimes mess up.

Yup yup. I think most of us have seen the "UID I'm feeling lucky pop ups", have been greeted by force closing apps and even the magic number mismatch message...yuck. good thing that our Gtabs are virtually unbrickable. Thanks to NVflash :)

ok looks like i am sucked in to grab one of these while i wait fort the adam.

who sells them online that ships overseas ( australia ) that has good prices on them

thanks

Not aware of any eTailer only sites, but the following stores sell and have web sites (not sure about international post):

1. KMart
2. Sears
3. Office Depot
4. Staples

Kmart would seem the least likely to ship overseas.

I am new and have no idea what your all talking about, wish I sis cause I am ready to take this thing back and I have had it 3 days it sucks big time all it is used for is e-mail and door stopper cause games forget it the flash is not good for it and download flash nope it will say it can not do it (fail down load everytime) I wish I had your knowage. even try to follow the direstion the guy gave another newbie but it did not work since all it did was tell me it was contected to the computer nothing else. I am disappointed but that is life maybe ipad though I had hope this would work and give apple a run since everyone wants an ipad. maybe someone will get a place for folks like me to go to and just hook up and download. sorry for the rant (just makes you want to cry when a toy does not work)

Awww man. I know how you feel. Fortunately I had some experience rooting my Moto Droid so to be honest rooting and installing a custom ROM on this gtablet was a breeze compared to what I had to go through with my phone. But I do remember the first time I tried to read and follow directions that someone else wrote up. I can help if you want. Just PM me. I'll try to respond timely.

hey everyone, thanks for the replies and advice. It took some looking, but I found users with similar issues on XDA and eventually got everything up and running!

The device is PHENOMINAL once rooted, and I can't recommend it enough (IF YOU HAVE ROOTING EXPERIENCE) (or can follow complex instructions with a great deal of patience!)

now if only there was a fix for the insanely shitty viewing angle...

When you guys say it sucks out of the box, what is that in reference to? I want to get a tablet, but I don't know the first thing about rooting or what any of these programs are you guys are loading on it. I want something to surf the web, watch ESPN3, play some games (my daughter likes a bowling game and my wife and I are addicted to angry birds), download some apps and maybe watch a movie from time to time. My wife hogs the laptop, I don't always feel like being in my office on my desktop and my Droid X, while nice, is really small for 40 something year old eyeballs to look at for very long. Without doing the mods talked about here, is this tablet non-functional for the intended use I listed? The only out of the box mod I would be doing to it would be turning it on.

Yes. It is useless for this right out of the box. there is no market app. YOu can side load apps, But honestly if you can figure out how to side load apps then you can easily follow the instructions to load TnT Lite Firmware on it and apply the market fix. with this you can do everything. Its not difficult. if you are computer savvy and can follow instructions then you can do this.

glad to hear you got everything up and running! Yeah, the angles gets to me sometimes. I wished that there was a way to at least adjust contrast and tint. That may help with the viewing angles...maybe that can be a feature of honeycomb. Looks like they added better audio settings to gingerbread maybe they can add advanced display settings to honey comb.

That's a really good way to put things. If you can side load apps, you can root this device. If you can put files in the sd card, you are half way to having a great device. :)

Hi there, just got my g tablet at Sears and ready to do Clockwork and TNT but for some reason I can not find links to it. I did search on XDA and I see Clockwork but its not anything called .8 its some versions of 1.6 upto 2.5 and its called ROM manager . Am I missing something?
Can someone give me direct link to it?? If I try downloading Clockwork Rom manager it turns out to be apk file not zip and no update in it. I do not need Rom manager. All I want is to do what you describing so I can have a functioning tablet. I can find TNT rom just fine but not Clockworkmod .8
Thanks for any help you can give me

Working Bekit Clockworks version is here;

ClockworkMod Recovery - xda-developers

Thanks for the link, got clockwork mod installed and tnt 2.2. Works like a charm. One last thing would like to fix is market. Can't find something called titanium mod. Tried to follow some instructions to fix market with some file browser app but couldn't understand them, so messed everything up, had to reload tnt but thanks to clockwork it was easy. Still need easy to follow directions on how to fix market on g tablet.

You need to side load the free version of titanium backup.

The only 'Fix' I needed was to flush the Google Services Framework data and reboot... you would also want to try some of the build.prop edits if you want your tablet to see some things that might otherwise filter out... but that's something seperate so the flush data first...

Settings- Applications- System Applications- Google Services Framework- Clear Data

I did my research but these instructions really pulled it together for me. I followed it today and had a flawless flash to tnt 2.2. Thanks!

I went to check this out at an Office Depot. They had a demo unit, and I don't know if it was unique to this unit, but the screen was not very responsive, had to select the icons multiple times to make it work. And the fact that it didn't have Market, it's ridiculous. Sure, there are work arounds, but if they really want a tablet to be a contender, they shouldn't release it like this.

I was looking at the front facing camera, and what application it used for video chat, and one of the salesman told me that it wasn't capable, and that only the camera application could be used. What's the point of taking pictures of your own mug

I asked the manager what his return policy was, as I wasn't sure about the demo unit, and wanted to give another one a try. The manager told me that if I bought it, it's mine, as they wouldn't accept returns, just exchanges. That pi$$ed me off, and said no thanks.

If this had been a unit for me, I would have taken on the challenge, and made it work, load custom roms, and waste a few hours making it work. But this unit is for my mom, and she is not technical person at all. I signed her up for email, facebook, etc. But I wanted something easy for her to use, and this unit wasn't it.

So, Mr. Jobs, got my business, as much as it pains me, I ended up buying an iPad, for my mom it was the best choice, solid interface (not customizable though) and she can easily access all her needs (facebook app sucks though). But I didn't see this G-Tablet as a good product, sure , us propeller heads can enjoy this, but if it's going to be used to see pictures of the grand kids, the apple boys have a better product. For now.

Yeah, this thread pretty much explains that the stock interface does not represent the capabilities of the unit. Its sad because there's a really good device hidden under that bad interface. The ipad is a great consumer device because its super simple. I don't get why people feel bad buying an apple product lol.
As for office depot, they're stupid haha. I wouldn't have bought it from them if their return policy is like that.
Anyways I think u could have made this device work for your mom with a little effort. I guess u don't love ur mom then....jk. I'm totally joking! :p. I'm gonna tell on you!
