Root [Virgin Mobile] 4.3 Speculation

Just read that Galaxy Gear will soon be supported on the S3, as well as others. The article states that a 4.3 update enables it. Here is to hoping Virgin isn't left out!

For those of us who are rooted would the process be like when MD7 came out and we had to flash and wipe?
 
I assume that when it becomes available those of us that are rooted can either wait for a dev to make a root friendly flashable zip or odin back to stock and take the ota.
 
When sprint comes we should be pretty set since the Cm builds for sprint work fine for virgin. 11/6 yall! Finally we can be rid of the s3 aosp signal strength problem

So the short answer is no? root will not allow automatic over the air updates? If the update is really coming on November 6th, I will just wait until then to root my phone.

I am unable to find any reliable or recent posts online regarding whether or not Virgin Mobile's galaxy s3 will get the update. Does anyone have any links?

Samsung wants as many devices as possible to work with the Galaxy gear so it is in their best interest to update all their phones to 4.3.

My worry though is that Virgin Mobile is viewed as a budget carrier. Plus it is the most recent carrier of S 3's. These two facts make me worried that they or virgin will not consider it worth it to update our phones...

They will update our phones because it's the highest end android phone for VM
 
The whole point of rooting (this is a rooted forum obviously) is to be able to run awesome custom ROM's that represent the latest Android builds. I rooted the day I got my SGS3 and have been running 4.3.x since; plus, no TouchWiz garbage. If Galaxy Gear, which doesn't seem quite ready for prime time yet if the return rate is any indicator, is the only real plus to stock 4.3, then not worth worrying about in my opinion.
 
Indeed. Agreed. I just like making a image backup of a factory standard os, touch wiz and all as a nice fall back in case of problems or the need. I doubt I'll get Gear. The Bluetooth le is something I'm looking forward to. (Hello Google glass!)

Found many supposed bits of news about galaxy s3 but none of them actually ever mentions virgin mobile ... that's why I'm worried. Fingers crossed. example follows (once again no mention of virgin which I realize is working under the Sprint umbrella, so I'll just assume that what Sprint gets, we get):

If we get the 4.3 update will this make it easier to get working Roms like Carbon and CM where the MMS and Data are working correctly all the time?
 
Now that would be a huge positive for sure! I'm also curious to see what some of the changes to 4.4 might mean going forward, specifically with Google integrating SMS/MMS into their Hangouts app. For me currently though, no LTE in my area means the "trade-off" between that or MMS is a moot point, so I am happy as can be with the current crop of custom 4.3.x ROM's available.
 
I got use to TouchWiz though :/ it's the same thing with the EVO V and Sense some people get attached after awhile I guess it's a preference thing but I hope someone makes a 4.3 or 4.4 ROM with it because right now still on rooted stock
 
November 6th eh? I saw in the main S3 forum 4.3 was supposed to be rolling out presently for Sprint, but usually VM is a month or more behind.
 
For what it's worth, to the best of my knowledge, once Virgin releases a phone, whatever Android build is on the phone is there to stay, as in no OTA upgrades. I think I remember reading that only one phone ever got upgraded since they started their service, the rest are stuck unless rooting and upgrading are taken care of by the phone owners who choose to do so. Here's hoping that they buck that trend now that they have a phone like ours which is still relatively high-end, even if it is a generation or so behind; I think a lot of the VM SGS3 crowd is kind of expecting to be taken care of properly on this one. I guess we will know within a month or so!

Unfortunately that's the precedent with prepaid carriers. When you think about it though, at this point in the US prepaid market there's no incentive for them to go beyond and above with support for their customers.

Probably a matter of you get what you pay for (or don't pay for as the case may be). No complaints though; when I look at what I could be spending on contract plans the savings on VM totally outweigh any negatives for me. Plus, with the ability to root and customize thanks to the awesome devs out there, I have always been really happy with my phones from them (the SGS3 is my third one), even the lower-end one that was on Gingerbread.
 
Didn't the Evo V 4G get upgraded from 2.2 to 4? I think there is a chance because the difference between the Sprint and VM versions of this phone are minimal.
 
The assumption that VM never updates the phones is not correct. I have seen OTA's for Optimus V, Galaxy Reverb, EVO V. And these are all of the phones I had with VM. So all of the VM phones I had received updates. The most recent phone, Galaxy Reverb, was updated from 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 and received one additional 4.1.2 update recently. I am definitely expecting that VM GS3 will be updated to 4.3 along with Sprint. The Sprint and VM phones have exactly the same hardware. The only difference is in the firmware and those are really minor. In the unlikely case that VM doesn't do the update, it will be really trivial to port that update to VM anyway. So people don't worry.

BTW, I have an S3 here. I am waiting for the 4.3 update to develop the MiRaGe kernel for it.
 
Guys, almost every rom for this phone is not virgin but the sprint version. So just flash your rom of choice and they will likely include any improvements found in the official sources.

Roms are already available for 4.3, so just flash and update when the time comes.

But did they work out the kinks like the 4G issues?
Edit: Like the general 4.3 Roms
