Root [Virgin Mobile] Battery Life/Kernel Tweaks Discussion Thread

Here's another kernel that I found in the XDA thread for Sprint SGS3.

[KERNEL][SPR][AOSP/TW][4.1/4.2/4.3/4.4][03/09/2014] KT747 - MD4 - KTweaker - xda-developers

KT747 kernel works for some and not for others, just FYI, depending on how new your SGS3 is; it flat-out will not flash on my phone, but I know a lot of users do like this kernel. BMS kernel is another kernel that does work, I didn't really care for it on JellyBean 4.3.x as it gave me bootloops without even tweaking the settings, but it does flash, and I believe the KitKat version is better, I did flash it once just to see and no bootloops at least. And then there's stupid-assed Anthrax kernel, it's the kernel of choice for hipster d-bags everywhere who like to brag about how they're "infected." I won't go off on too much of a rant about it here, but look it up and you'll see what I mean.

How's quantum kernel working for ya man? I'm very interested and may flash it if it's any good.

So I've only been running it for about eight hours, but I'm going to give it a stamp of approval. The deep sleep I had read another user raving about is true, I installed before going to bed last night, and seven hours later the battery had only dropped 1%! As always, this is on my ZeroLemon, but still very pumped about this. Phone is running very smoothly so far this morning as well.

I'll definitely have to give it a flash. I ran some benchmarks last night and got a worse benchmark with dkp installed. I don't know what gives lol

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in benchmarks, whether it's Quadrant, Antutu, or any other. They can be kind of useful to compare ROM/kernel combos on the same phone, but that's about it. What's more important is the direct user experience, i.e. how you feel the phone is actually performing for your specific needs.

I'm actually interested on what you have to say about the Anthrax Kernel. Can you please explain lol? I used to run that kernel for a little bit on my HTC Evo V 4G until I switched to ButteredToast for the remainder of my time with that phone.

From everything I've read, the guy behind it is a total fraud, refuses to reveal his code source, and makes access to the kernel some kind of private club. The people on XDA who brag about having "the kernel you can't talk about on XDA" and then put the infected thing into their sig lines, or do the lowercase/uppercase letter combo to mimic the "proper" spelling for the kernel, it all just rubs me the wrong way. I understand that it runs well for those that use it, but it flies in the face of everything Android stands for.

Deep sleep? Is this in DKP as well or only quantum?

Also, if I have DKP right now, do I have to clean install rom etc to flash a new kernel or can I flash ontop of the other?

With DKP my battery actually drains pretty quickly. Now I haven't underclocked or anything yet but I'm sure doing that would help out. I'll probably try quantum but wondering the same thing.

Deep sleep is a state your phone should reach when idle, some kernels handle it better than others. And as always, what works great for one user may not be so hot for another. As far as flashing a new kernel, just boot to recovery and flash the new kernel, nothing else needed. If you want to return to the stock kernel, then a reflash of the ROM is needed, unless you have made a flashable zip containing the boot.img from the ROM. I generally just recommend making a backup of the ROM prior to flashing a new kernel, and then you can just flash your backup if you want.

Well then, Might have to try it out. Would you mind sourcing the deep sleep raving that you previously mentioned? Want to read more about this kernel.

[First you get me to jump ship on CM11 for LiquidSmooth, now kernels... I love you (no homo)]

Trying out Quantum Kernel with CM11 but it won't let me set the minimum speed any lower than 1024? Weird.

I was about to try that tonight as I've been outside cleaning my front lawn all afternoon but glad I didn't yet. I won't use quantum till I go to liquid smooth.

I'm interested in this kernel as well, please keep us updated.

If I can't set the min speed lower than 1024, it may be a deal breaker for me.

Just installed Quantrum. What's settings do y'all recommend? I'm using andromizer and also do you peeps recommend under volting
