Help [VIRGIN MOBILE] Data Speeds

@kevindroid no lte. so future-proofing/speed is what's missing.

OP, if lte is available in your area, potentially tenfold (30-40 Mb/s to 300 Mb/s).
Actual mileage will vary.
 
Speeds are good when I have full bars and still decent when I only have a few.

What i love about people moving to 4g is that its freeing up the 3g bandwidth. I average about 10Mb/s on 3g lately and its mega-cheap and unlimited so its all good. I do get a bit jealous when i see good 4g speeds though lol.. especially when im downloading a rom or a torrent :)

Yeah dude, I'm right there with you. Wimax on VM is actually slower than the 3g now, and that's not a bad thing. I can actually stream Netflix over 3g now. Loving it. I have a gs2 4g running cm10.1, btw.

I think you might be imagining the difference at the moment. The only UK carrier to have 4g already is EE. This is because every other carrier has had to wait for the new frequencies to be auctioned off before they can use them for 4g. EE however gave the government a back hander or something (disclaimer: me or Android Forums don't actually believe they did that:)) so they would be allowed to set up 4g on their existing 1800mhz frequency. I'm not saying you won't notice the difference eventually when the new frequencies get introduced but at the moment there's the same traffic on the same amount of frequencies.
 
Although 3uk doesn't use the 1800mhz frequency yet (they'll be using that for 4g) so if people are moving from 3 to EE it would free up 3uk's frequency band so I'll stop talking now:)
 
4G is considerably faster than 3G, the use of a given frequency band doesn't determine the speed rather the amount of spectrum assigned within that band. The 3G UMTS standard uses 5MHz of radio bandwidth, this typically refers to 5MHz in the uplink, from device to network, and 5MHz in the downlink, from network to device, often represented as 2 x 5MHz. The latest 3G feature, known as dual-cell HSDPA can aggregate 2 of these 5MHz channels in the downlink. 4G LTE can use up to 2 x 20MHz channels, hence EE's recent "double speed" 4G marketing as they've added this extra channel bandwidth. In the near future a new 4G feature will allow multiple 4G channels to be aggregated, up to 2 x 100MHz, therefore increasing the peak and average data rates still further. Other advantages of 4G include a much faster uplink and much lower latency (RTT), therefore enabling a more optimised TCP session resulting in a faster application layer performance.
