Root [Virgin Mobile] Hello! Is my used Victory already rooted?

Startech

Newbie
I decided to upgrade my VM Optimus V! It is my only internet connection, because I live out in the sticks! So before I xfer my service to the Victory, I want to make sure I can use it as a hotspot. The seller had a strong accent and I could not hardly communicate with him, but the phone looked great, so I took a chance and bought it. After getting home, I noticed it has the SuperSU app but when I click on it, it says no binary installed.

Without transferring my service yet, is there a way I can tell if this rooted? And if so, what ROM/Kernel is installed?

Can I also get the wifi hotspot installed before I transfer my service?

My eyes are blurry from all the googling today, but I am really looking forward to this trek!

Without the binaries the SuperSu app is useless. Sounds like it was rooted but the seller may have tried to unroot.

You can check settings/about device and check build and kernel versions to tell if running stock or custom rom/kernel. If your not sure post what you see and we can help you out.

I'd see if it has custom recovery. With phone off, hold volume down while turning on. This will load into recovery. There are 3 possible recoveries. Stock, TWRP and CWM. Stock should say something like Android System recovery at top, CWM says CWM based recovery at top and should be a version 6.x.x.x, TWRP is very easy to distinguish because when it boots it will say TWRP and the interface is touch with large buttons. Stock and CWM are menu based and you navigate up and down with volume keys and select with power button to get out of recovery just select reboot.

If you have custom recovery it is very easy to root device and once rooted you would be able to tether.

Thank you for your response. I followed your instructions and the phone seems to be stuck in odin mode.
Custom Binary Download=no
Current binary=Samsung Official
System Status=Official

It says Downloading....Do not turn off target.

It has been like this for an half hour now, what should I do?

Just pull battery and reinstall. Make sure your holding volume up while powering on to enter recovery. Volume down enters odin.

If you keep getting odin mode while trying to enter recovery, there may be an issue with your recovery. You can follow instructions in thread I posted above to reinstall

Ahh, that worked!

It has stock recovery.

4.1.2
Kernel 3.0.31-1308964

I think you are correct and seller either failed with root attempt or put it back to stock.

So I guess I should just go ahead and follow the instructions for root, then pick a apk from TrevE for wifi hot spot? I should be able to do this prior to transferring my service, correct?

I think you should activate the phone to your account and then root it. I don't think you can activate a rooted phone. Or at least a phone on a custom ROM.

If you just root you should be fine. The fact that it has stock recovery tells me it wasn't rooted or was rooted and seller installed the recent OTA update (mg5) and that killed root and rewrote stock recovery.

Anywho the instructions in root thread will get you custom recovery and root. Then after you activate you could install Victorious Rom if you want.
