Root [Virgin Mobile] No MMS on Vmobile 4g?

insanelycool

I read a bit about this in another part of the forum about APNs and whatnot.

I found out the other day that I can't send or recieve MMS... I tried the method of GoSMS and manual APN settings, but it only worked when I switched the phone to CDMA only mode.

Does anyone know if this is supposed to work for 4g (LTE/CDMA mode)?
When I called tech support they said that CA and Washington DC (Where I am located) are having issues with MMS.

Is there a workaround I can use so I don't have to switch to CDMA mode to do MMS? Maybe an app that forces a 3g connection temporarily?

I manually browsed to the "apns-conf.xml" file in system/ect and looked at it, all the setting are the sprint APN's... My service works great 4g connection, ect, just no MMS... I've even managed to get about 10GB of data this month with no apparent throttling the whole time. I may just be lucky or on a tower with little usage other than myself.

Any help would be appreciated... I don't really want to trade the phone in like the post I read suggested. I have no splash screens other than the samsung one at boot.

I had same issue, tried tech support for 2 weeks.
I returned the phone for another and it worked fine.
**** my phone initially had a Sprint splash screen on first boot, then no splash screen after system update.

This makes me wonder if I should just deal with not having MMS (I may have a sprint phone apparently? Though I bought it from the virgin mobile website, lol)... if it is a sprint phone I might be able to switch to sprint one of these days? in case I decide to start touring with my music, not having roaming is the biggest reason to not have VM... but at the moment I am pretty stationary and get good coverage.

I am sure I will try some other things... I mean, if it works in CDMA mode, why wouldn't it work in LTE/CDMA? Maybe an app that switches to 3g connection could help me. I will test this when I get off work today.

I'm not sure, but mine doesn't have the Virgin splash, just the sound, so its hard for me to say. MMS works on mine.

Out of curiosity, is anyone else able to get WiMax 4g? The tech I talked to was adamant that I wasn't supposed to get any 4g in my area due to the fact there there is no LTE here on Sprint yet, and my phone is supposed to be 4g LTE only and not capable of getting the WiMax 4g that they have out here. I don't have the LTE part lit up but my phone has connected to 4g since day one.

I also managed to go rediculously over the "soft cap" for data this month and haven't noticed any throttling. (I somehow managed to push over 10GB)... no I haven't been tethering, streaming, or torrents/internet downloads. Most of it was downloading apps/games from the play store (my cell doesn't pick up the wifi in my house when I'm in my room), and google play music, as well as some skype action.

I have'nt got any e-mails or texts telling me to slow down my usage, and the tech said nothing about my usage either (I didn't mention it either). As long as they don't freak out on me over my usage I am super happy with Virgin Mobile right now, even without MMS... This much data is unusual for me though, the first month I only went slightly over with just under 4GB total.

I may just be on a tower that isn't getting a lot of use out here, or maybe something else to do with my phone being provisioned weird and thus not getting MMS but somehow getting WiMax that I'm supposedly not supposed to be getting?

You might not officially have LTE, but it might be worth it to check Sensorly to see if Sprint is currently implementing LTE in your area as part of the Network Vision initiative. The Victory should not be able to get WiMax at all since it doesn't support WiMax frequencies.

The sensorly map does show 4g (non wimax) in my area... since there is no lte option I assume that is part the 4g band that my phone supports though. Like I mentioned earlier I dont get any LTE letters lit up on my phone, just 4G... The VM tech that said I shouldnt be getting 4g at all must be out of the loop...which from things I have heard doesn't surprise me at all.

For Sensorly, the Sprint 4G section means LTE, they have a separate Sprint WiMax map. From what I understand, it doesn't matter if you're on a WiMax phone or LTE phone, it will just show "4G" in the notification bar if you are on 4G (whatever type of 4G it is).

However, given that a WiMax phone cannot use LTE and vice-versa, then 4G means whatever 4G type the phone supports. In the case of the Victory, 4G means LTE.

There seems to be a bit of confusion spreading here. First of all, there are two types of 4G signals currently being broadcast by Sprint. One is on the uprise and the other is slowly being discontinued. But both are considered to be a 4G standard.

In brief... for those who may not know...

WiMax technology was the first 4G standard to be broadcast (back when the 4G standards were slightly different). Sprint and Clearwire both jumped on WiMax like a fly on poo, both believe this could and will be the sure standard. Well, we now see that turned out.

LTE is the more welcomed and adapted 4G standard the industry as a whole has backed. Because of this Sprint's arm was twisted and forced to jump ship and reinvest in LTE, giving up on expanding their WiMax footprint.

The Samsung Galaxy Victory is a CDMA/LTE phone. It cannot pick up on the WiMax 4G signal. When 4G is listed, it is notifying the user they are connected to the LTE broadcast. When 3G is listed it is connected to the others (1x, EVDO, etc.).

It will NOT list LTE on the status bar. But you can find out which one of the many signals you are connected to by heading into the About Device > Status section of your phone's settings menu.

This doesn't make me that impressed with the tech support then because they are convinced that there is no 4g LTE in my area...

But thanks for the info and setting the record straight!

With my history with tech support, they are usually only informed of changes and upgrades when we know about it, sometimes even after. They are probably using the same coverage map we use.

Also, unlike the other carriers, Sprint has said in their releases and updates that some areas are being lit up with LTE before being announced to the public and that those customers are free to use it if they have it.
