This seems to have disabled the update notification.

That should do it, I use 'app quarantine' for all my disabling/freezing though. That damn pesky SystemUpdateService, lol.

I wanted to update, and when the update failed the first time I assumed this was because the unit wasn't fully charged. I fully charged the unit and tried again, the same thing happened: The installation progress bar progressed about 1/3 of the way as a little Android icon appeared with a rotating object in its tummy.
After 1/3 of the way the unit displayed an Android icon that was flat on its back, with a door open on its abdomen as if it had just lost a game of Operation.
The dead-Android icon blinked off within 1/2 a second and the update failed. I can't get past this point.

wow, I never received any notification of an update. I have my auto update off for most everything, so maybe that's why... In Texas. I have since used disable service, though, so I guess I won't.

Got my update notification today. I unrooted using SuperSu applied update but it failed. So i checked to see if system was up to date through settings and it says it is but nothing changed still on v5. So i re-rooted using mottochopper again and continuing on until next time.

My rooted, but un-modded VM phone did the same thing. Still says it is on version V5. Not hassling me for an update and appears to work fine. Hope I'm not missing out on anything by not having the "update" as they call it.

Most likely the update is just to cripple root.
I do want to download the updated zip file that was posted here and look it over. Can always pull apps and such and manually update if wanted.

If they don't want rooting, then the should allow apps to be moved to SD and put more memory in the Phone!!!I think I'll leave things the way they are. Can they disable my phone because I have not completed the update successfully?

The update is not mandatory or it would not give you an option of yes or no. So as long as you pay the bills you should be good.
Who exactly is "they"?
Android features like the ability to move apps to the SD card are determined by Google as they created and update the Android OS.
Storage space is determined by the manufacturer of the device, in this case LG.
System/firmware updates are pushed by the manufacturer and/or carrier.
An update may patch some root exploits but that won't be its only purpose, it's not worth the time and trouble to write and push an update just for that. The real reason usually has to do with things like bug fixes, performance improvements (hopefully), maybe some new bloatware. In some cases there may actually be an update to Android itself to a newer version, but don't hold your breath for that. LG isn't known for doing so, at least not on its mid-level phones.
And your phone won't be disabled for failing to take the update. However if the update addresses changes that your carrier is making to their network, such as adding or moving to different spectrum, declining the update may affect signal or connectivity in the future.

As stated before update just changes the radio to more accurately monitor 4G connection and it also removes your root, so if you are rooted causes soft brick boot loop, my phone updated and had to use the sticky unroot method. If you want the update (which I don't see why losing app2sd or swapping internal and ext) then unroot your phone first and restore stock recovery, other wise as previously stated just block the annoying update. Unless anyone has information as to viably why we should update and if we can regain root, I wouldn't worry, almost all my phones have root and updates disabled because unless there's a security patch (one I actually care about and not removing root) or a carrier merger/tower switch there's no reason to update, well unless we got kit kat, which won't happen until if possible custom roms.
Saferoot can be used post-update to re-root the phone.

Oh? well still don't see it as a necessary update haha. If you want post a simple guide for those that want it and are unfamiliar with safe root.
It may very well not be necessary, at least in the short term. I held off on doing mine for a while to see if anyone posted about undesirable effects from the update, then decided to proceed after the reports people posted seemed positive (better signal and battery life). It's been a couple of weeks now and everything seems the same, the only negative so far was that the update installed the latest version of Maps which sucks so I had to go back to the older version.
That said, as you can see by my profile I'm on Metro not VM so there may be some differences between the update for our respective phones. Also I'm not worried about throttling since I'm on an unlimited 4G plan.
I'm sure as time passes more specific details will emerge about what these updates actually do (and don't) do.

We get unlimited 3G, but it gets throttled down after 2.5gb. Your 4G will be throttled as well even tho you get unlimited.
Prompted again for an update. I bit. Same dead-Android-for-half-a-second schtick. This time all my apps and settings were hosed and I was unrooted. Still at V5. Prompted yet again for an update, same failed update except it did not again erase any apps or settings. Still at V5. Now I am prompted for updates to Voicemail and VM apps, those at least installed successfully.
Cliffs: Had to reload everything. Still at V5. No longer prompted for update. No longer rooted.

Mine did the thing were it said it was updating and showed the little happy android guy for 5 seconds with a green line but then went immediately to android dude dead on his back, being stabbed in the chest. Nothing was actually updated as far as I could see - nothing was update and nothing was "damaged".
