Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] backing up original rom

I have installed the LS720ZV6 and was wondering if there is a way to backup my complete ROM. If so, what software would I need to do it.

CWM or TWRP. Do a nandroid backup.

Both programs require your phone to be rooted.
Is there an alternative that doesn't require root?
