Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] v6 update back with service disabled

i have so many tweaks setup.. like swapping my sd card with internal space etc.. i dont wanna have to redo it.. let alone cant even remember how i did..

does this v6 update kill all that?

From various posts I've read, my understanding is that a phone rooted with Motochopper will soft-brick when the v6 update is attempted. Have I misunderstood this? Do you have experience that's contrary to this?

I have read where it soft-bricked some. I must have got lucky on mine. After "updating" awhile, it showed an android laying on his back with a red "!" on his chest - meaning the update failed. It took a lot longer to reboot, but after the reboot I still had root and everything was fine. Except for the annoying "Update..." message which we were able to suppress for awhile. Now that it showed up again, I went ahead and Unbricked method to V6.

I'd also like a definitive answer to this. I have a v5 phone that was rooted last year using Motochopper (no custom ROMs, no special recovery stuff, nothing special except root access so I could run Link2SD), and all I want is to update to v6 without having to start over from scratch. Is this possible?

(Sure, I could just try it, but the "unbrick guide" is daunting — especially given that I don't have access to a Windows machine — and I'd like to avoid the possibility that it will be needed!)

Try it and report back. There's no better way to learn then trying

If it doesn't install, and if your phone doesn't boot afterwards, all you will need to do is factory reset your phone. Hold Volume up + Power during boot.

Backup first using titanium backup.

"All you will need to do"? That's exactly what I'm trying to avoid!

I do have Titanium Backup, but I've only ever used it to backup individual apps so that I can revert to earlier versions if need be. How can in help me in this situation? Are you saying that if I do a full TB backup of every last one of my apps, it will be able to get me back in business again after a factory reset? Even if most of my stuff is on a Link2SD second partition?

Not helping.

Your not helping As well. You answered your own question. The worse case scenario is that you have an non updated phone and need to reinstall apps. Not a big deal. My point is that you can find the answer by rereading old posts. You did that. :)

If you really want to upgrade you may need to wipe and reinstall your apps.

Trial by error is the best way to learn. We're here to help you as you try it your self and run into issues.

Its your phone. Have fun with it. Don't be scared to do a little messing around.

You could install cwm recovery and flash the v6 stock ROM over top of your current setup and keep your settings that way. If you do, wipe the cache and dalvik cache.

To answer your question, flashing would fail. You would need to remove the battery to reboot but your apps would still be there.

I skipped the unbrick and just updated to cwmt recovery and updated to v6 that way... Nagging about update got on my nerves... That being said, the v6 deodexed rom kept trying to sync so I went back to stock v6 odexed all is good now

Is factory resetting 100% reliable? Or is there a chance it'll go awry if I've futzed around with stuff in the /system directory, removed bloatware, etc.? I guess what I'm wondering is, when you do a factory reset, where does it get all the built-in OS stuff from?

(And will I need to re-activate the phone?)

A factory reset will wipe the /data folder only. All of your installed apps and settings will be wiped. All of the system apps will remain. It will return it to the state it was when you first got your phone.

To reactivate your phone you will have to go to
Settings > System updates
Then Update PRL, and then Update profile.

If any of them fail, just try it again. If it continues to fail, reboot your phone ad then try again. Eventually you will get them updated.

If only the /data folder is wiped, then it WON'T be in the state it was when I first got it, because I've altered (as root) some things in the /system folder -- sounds and such. So that's what I'm wondering: might my alterations cause the reset to go haywire?

Your data folder will be the only folder wiped

howd did you do this? is there a step by step link somewhere? this LV6 update message is driving me crazy.. but i've super customized the fone so i guess i have to just do it over.
I really just wanted to keep the sd card and internal sd swapped..

I tried installing the update via the dialogue box that pops up. It downloaded the rom and went to install it and it went fine. But it kept booting to cwm recovery (mine was rooted with cwm recovery installed). So i did a backup and did a factory reset and still kept booting to cwm so i had to do the unbrick method and reinstall v5. I guess i'll grab the v6 rom and install it after i back up everything.

You need the stock recovery installed in order to install stock system updates.

Im not exactly sure why most of you are having the V6 update notification issue. I've had a solution to that for over 2 months now (thanks Sharkhunter)... Basically after you receive the notification say install later. After that download root browser or similar app. In root browser go to /cache (needs root permission), and then delete the V6 update zip.. After deleting the zip go back to settings and updates.. Accept and install the V6 update. Since there is no zip, it will just stall when it says rebooting.. Wait a couple of seconds and then just exit out of that, and then the notification will no longer pop up. Sorry guys I thought you all knew, and trust me it works.

I did the unbrick method to the letter then ran the v6 update. It went through perfect . After this was done I rooted with saferoot, and did all of my mods after that . Everything is running smooth for me. The updated radio that installed with v6 actually gets better signal at my work. Where before the update I couldnt stream pandora and now i can.

Thanks! This does work-- the annoying upgrade prompt has not been seen since I did this 24 hours ago.

I still intend to do a flash directly to v6 sometime soon, when I can carve out enough time to fiddle with the phone to do the flash, re-install the apps, and re-do all of my customizations. But for now it is a relief to be rid of the upgrade prompt.
