Root [Virgin Mobile] [TUTORIAL] CM10.1 on VM GS3

If you have an SPH-L710 with a newer mmc revision (also backwards compatible) this kernel should do the trick https://www.dropbox.com/s/n0a1yo14qxwlvrb/boot.img (md5sum b5d9d2f51e005986f4bc1f7c300adb63) its compiled directly from unaltered cyanogenmod 10.2 repo.

Of course the nightly buildbots should have the fixed kernel by midnight.

Super sweet! CM10.2 just booted on my phone.

now for apn / LTE settings.....................

Apn settings can be found in the beginning of the thread or you can use your backed up stock settings for 3g/mms

If you get stuck at the splash screen - hard power down (or battery pull), and go back to CWM and do a factory wipe / reset, wipe cache and davlik cache, then flash everything from OP again. That worked for me when I got stuck the first time.

I tried this but no dice. Still stuck at the splash screen :/

New phones need special kernel or updated one. The nightly build bot should start with it soon. I'll post a flashable version when I get home (late) tonight.

Edit: the kernel is what sredtv posted above (#322) but will be flashable. Hit thanks for him a few posts up please.

For those who wanted to try it out early. Here is the kernel packaged and ready to flash.

It should allow you to get past the splash screen for 4.3 ROMs (CM10.2 and such)

Will not work on 10.1

VMU_CM10.3

Ive used it on CM10.2
Slim Bean 4.2
PA Android 4.3
Eclipse 4.3

Flash ROM > then flash this kernel > then boot

4.3 Kernel for newer Sprint phones

Also works with JellyBam 10.3 :D
Edit: However keyboard force closes and softkeys do not work

Okay so I used this kernel with the Slim Bean Rom and the only thing not working so far is MMS. Camera works, LTE works with the APN settings configuration by acewonders. So far so good! Very smooth :)

is there such a thing has a non CM based rom. i would love a pure google stock rom for the vm edition.

Even though I posted a "CM" kernel it worked on those AOSP based ROMs.

Slim / Eclipse / Super Nexus are AOSP from what I could tell.

CM / PA Android / PACMAN are CM based

For ROOTBOX - it says rootbox sources so not sure

Try SUPER NEXUS for a true AOSP experience.

I flashed the sprint bootloader, but I still get an assert failed when I try install 10.2 saying ro.product.device doesn't equal d2spr or d2spi. Should I change the d2vmu in my build.prop to d2spr? (or edit the updater-script to include d2vmu?)

Also, I believe I have an MG2 device, should I not have flashed the sprint bootloader?

EDIT: Nevermind, looked on previous page and found problem.

Flashed 10.2 and can't get root. Might be the nightly? I can get other roms rooted fine.

Edit: Was accidentally flashing the root-from-recovery zip. runs great now
