Virgin to start allowing Sprint phones

Devices must meet certain specifications before they can be activated by a MVNO, but Sprint hasn't gone into detail on what those requirements are.

Aha, a catch. Theres always a catch! Let's just hope it's not just a "select few" but more like phones released in the past 2-3 years.

It's probably just basic stuff like that it can't be extremely old, has to be off contract and not be a bad esn.

Also, they will need a contract fitting for the phone.. I.E. no smartphones on Virgin's call centric plans.

Yeah that should be most of the issues.... phones can't be blacklisted before coming over.

Ting had started this and people seemed happy, although they were so far unable to do WiMax phones because they were not able to add new phones onto the Clearwire system... they could only activate phones sold under the prepaid plan.

This could have some major ripples on the entire U.S. wireless system. The major drawback to CDMA in the States has been you either had to buy a locked carrier phone, go into grey areas of reprogramming a phone, or buy a Verizon second-hand phone and pay their insane prepaid prices.

Now people will be able to choose any of the Sprint first-line phones out there and put them on plans that pay for themselves within a year or two.

This also probably is part of the plan to allow people to buy phones via Virgin and finance them. We'll probably see Sprint's full lineup for sale.

Postpaid sales have been stagnant for a few years, pre-paid is where all serious growth is happening. Not just that, but T-Mobile has been making waves since offering unsubsidized plans, which are less risky for carriers. Verizon has been watching what T-Mobile is doing with interest, and AT&T has apparently been targetting T-Mobile users, probably because they see what is happening.

Another thing to remember is that most of the world uses pre-paid and unsubsidized phones, and Sprint was just bought by a Japanese company.

just read this over at androidcentral...
not too excited though...
still no cdma nexus 4...
but s3 is available...
and prob the htc one...

Expect to pay $600-800 for an HTC One (4mp camera? really? why are we going backwards? no sdcard or removable battery either)

Personally, I would like an Evo LTE, even if it is a bit bigger than I want.

I can live without Removable Battery. But I wasn't aware of the 4mp camera...That's kind of lame.

LTE Would be nice, I will admit. Perhaps a note/note 2 as well. Though its a bit big, its such a nice device.

But hey, at least we'll have more options right? though VM has had some solid phones. The Optimus V was a damn sturdy phone (Mine still works, still running harmonia on one, CM7 on the other) and the One V is a good HTC Device. I just like the 3D because of the bigger screen. We'll see, though, what the requirements are. I imagine a phone that's a minimum of a year old and a maximum of two-three years old. Time will tell, though.

Does that mean that I could move to Ting or Boost Mobile and get a better deal on my unlimited plan? Would I be able to run my existing ROM on either of those carriers (Harmonia)??

Out of all the MVNO's, Virgin is going to be the most problematic simply because of the asinine way they do mms, all of the others that piggyback on Sprint do it Sprints way, which means that for you to get mms using a Sprint phone Virgin has to change the way that they use mms or have your phone flashed to Virgin software.
OB

Well lets be honest here. How many people will buy a phone and put it on a carrier and NOT root/rom it? Either way, you'd have to manually change the settings. So really, activate, Root/Rom, change settings, done.

Yeah but Virgin can't officially support that so they either have to start doing mms like everyone else or your phone will have to be flashed by Virgin to bring it over. Hopefully it'll be the first option.

Well, its been confirmed, but we'll see what it entails.

i have a list of devices I want, so that's not a problem. Problem is just waiting to see what we can get.

I'm not a very patient person at times. Lol.
