Help ***Virus found on INC!!!***

serpentine009

Android Enthusiast
I have no scientific data to confirm this....but here is what happened. My no-so-tech-friendly sister's boyfriend has an Inc. I rooted it for him and installed a new ROM etc... etc...
We both play hockey for the same team. We both recently received an email containing just a weird link from a member of the team. Less than 24 hours later, a mass email to some of his contacts goes out with a similar weird link.

I have his @Live account setup via EAS using the Vanilla Email app. I asked him if he opened the link and he said no. I asked him if he opened the email on a computer and he said no. Although he claims not to have opened the link, he stated to me earlier that when he opened the email it looked weird and he closed it. Then proceeds to tell me that last night his phone was acting real weird and his email was acting funny.

So, with the very limited facts that I have provided...I believe that he opened the email and clicked the link from his Incredible, and subsequent emails were sent from his device.

I am not sure how viruses like this work when you open the link from a home computer vs. a handheld.

Is this even plausible on an Android OS?

Well, you could go ahead and forward the email to my junk account: zemerick13@hotmail.com and ill check it out. Im on stock unrooted so its very unlikely if theres a virus that itll affect me...i can also just wipe the phone easily enough. Just please remember to change the subject line so i know which piece of spam is the one i need to check:)

Oh, and yes...its theoretically possible to get a virus, especially with root access. Although, its also theoretically possible to hack a computer through the power lines. Theory and reality dont always line up:)

Sent two. Test 1 and Test 2. Thanks

normally viruss for phones, force the phone to send numerous messages and calls to premium rate numbers.

I've read about a few virus for Android spotted. But a Virus has to be written for the OS you want to infect. It the virus was written to infect windows machines, it shouldn't have any effect on your phone, and vice versa.

A windows virus, "talking" a windows language, wouldn't be able to tell your android phone to send emails and whatnot.

It's just as likely that someone else who he knows that has similar e-mail contacts got the virus.... Since you stated only SOME of the contacts got the weird e-mail. Those type of worms generally mail to EVERYONE in your contacts. Even if the other "after-the-incident" e-mails say they were sent from the boyfriend, that information is easily and usually spoofed by the worm. The only way to know for sure would be retrieve the e-mail headers and locate the originating ip address of the new batch of e-mails (could be getting re-directed, but that is less likely).

Quick and to the point I loaded a custom rom about 3 months back and everything was fine until I woke my phone up to see that I had to log in to my google account when I did it asked me to verify a captcha and then I went to my email to see wtf was up I noticed a bunch of emails attempted to be sent with virus attached links to them to all of my contacts my phone somehow noticed what was up and stopped it from sending and kicked me off the google servers I assume, Later that day I sent a text message to my boss who called back immediately stating his phone was bombarded with random gibberish text messages, I uninstalled the ROM and have not had aproblem since

Thanks for the replies. He does have stupid apps on his phone that may have had something built into it....or the two events are just unrelated. Anyway, an updated version of the ROM I have him on was just released...so I will be flashing this week. Hopefully if anything is on there, it will go away.
