I wouldn't say it's necessary but it's probably a good idea; there have been several trojans within fake applications that rob you of your data pretty fast.
I wanted a free "find my phone" app of sorts and found Lookout which also has app scanning built right in so I just left it on. It also can backup your pictures and contacts if you're into that but I do backups for my phone on my computer.
I'm also using Lookout. I haven't seen any reviews on it, but it was the only such program I found. Thus, I dunno how effective it is, but it does give reassuring messages about scanning other apps I install.
there are relatively few android trojans or viruses out there atm....and really the only way to get them is by sideloading (installing nonmarket) apps from random sites....anything you d get from an android website is usually safe...its when you start getting warez and other stuff from random chatrooms and forums...thats when problems can occur
but really i havent used any of the antivirus apps and to each his own...but id imagine theyre not light on your battery
