So what does the AVG antivirus app do on Android? Do I need it?

Just read the advice in this thread (as well as the great link eyebeam gave you) and check out the description int he market for AVG and decide if its for you.

Personally, antivirus/antimalware apps dont go near my devices

Just curious as to why you don't use them? Been using lookout since I got my first Android roughly 2 years ago

I used to use anti-malware apps. I stopped using them over a year ago because they never found anything. I reason that either: 1) I have good sense in picking non-malicious apps, 2) the app can't detect malicious apps, or 3) both.

I've never caught a malware app yet for me it's the peace of mind it's there if I just happen to get an app that is

But then again I could stop being lazy by reading comments, checking rating which I obviously do already etc etc and get rid of lookout

Because if you install apps from the google play store they aren't going to contain malware.

And if they do get an app by its going to be such a new attack that the antivirus app isn't going to be able to detect it anyway.

Also, I'm a rooted user. All I have to do is reinstall a Rom and I know I'm 100% malware free

Me too. No AV apps. Why? Because you don't want a useless app running in the background eating battery. I can take dropbox and sugarsync since I use them, but something as useless as an AV on Android does not get free pass to decrease my battery life.

Rooted user as well nor do I install non marker apps, just never really read up on it in detail until today, now I see why anti malware apps are practically useless minus the fact if it has lost phone features etc. Even then like me is useless as I never let my phone out of my sight.

There are apps to find your phone without being paired to an antimalware app.

If you would like to use one of them, there are plenty
