visual voicemail options

Newbie
Ok I'm new to android, coming over from iphone, and I was wondering what was the best option for visual voicemail. I think the 2 best are google voice and youmail but can't decide which one to go with. Anyone have any thoughts on which one is best and easiest to set up?

thanks in advance?

google voice or youmail (youmail.com).

both have their own apps. Youmail is strictly for voicemails.

I used youmail on my blackberry. It was time consuming to setup but had a lot of features. I liked that I could have voicemail great people with their names. You had to upload your phonebook to their website but it was cool. Most voicemails I got started with "that is so cool, how did it know my name!"

The lady on the phone yesterday with AT&T told me that with them only having a handful of Android devices, that they will be putting Visual Voicemail on to some of them, and there should be an update coming soon. She told me that the only phones on the AT&T network currently with Visual Voicemail are a few Blackberrys and the iPhones.

Has anyone else heard of AT&T enabling visual voicemail?

For now, I'm going to stick with Google Voice on my Captivate.

open your phone app. dial *004*1xxxxxxxxxx# (where x's are your google voice phone number). you will receive a confirmation note saying conditional forwarding is activated or something like that. You will be using google voice for voicemail after that. it is seamless. i think it is much better than carrier visual voicemail.

Ok, I must be stupid! How do I get a Google Voice number? I downloaded the app several times but always get stuck at configuring voicemail. My options are "configure" or "skip" whenever I hit "configure", there's nothing to configure or it says "no changes made".

Damn..I figured it out! I never got notification of my Google Voice number being activated although it was 2 days ago! The only way I knew was I went to voice.google.com and it directed to my Google Voice inbox that had my phone number on the page. I entered it with the above mentioned *004*1xxxxxxxxxx# and got the confirmation! Maybe the Google Voice install instructions need some clarification?

Now that it's setup, when I reject a test call, it just says "we could not complete your call, please try again". Is that normal when you first get it setup?

I would log in to your google voice account via your web browser, then check your settings for voicemail. I had a similar issue because something in there was unchecked - sorry I can't remember what the option was.

There are only 2 options in settings - Voicemail Notifications (either email, sms or both) and Default Voicemail Greeting. I'm gonna try to be patient, it's probably just a little lag between configuration settings with Google and AT&T.

Under Phones tab you have voicemail activated for your phone? That's interesting... how long has it been since you first set it up?

I had to access the page from my phone. I work at a government facility that blocks access to google.com/voice. The default "Welcome to Googel Voice" message is in my inbox dated 2 days ago (when I first installed GV on my phone). The mobile webpage has my correct phone number listed under "mobile number". I just tried another VM test and got the same message as above.

If I decide to abandon this, how to I tell the system to use AT&T voicemail again (basically undo the *400* thing)?

Damn! It FINALLY worked! Turns out, the mobile version of www.google.com/voice wasn't showing me everything. There was the Phone tab that had my mobile number under registered phones. It had a link to activate my voicemail but IT GAVE ME A DIFFERENT NUMBER TO ENTER THAN MY GV PHONE NUMBER! My GV number ended in 69 but the *400* number it wanted me to enter ended in 66! Once I did that, everything worked like a champ! I guess we can't use our phones (or their browsers) to do everything!

Yeah at first from doing it on my phone I set it up and when calls went to my voicemail it would say "trying to find (some wierd guy talking quick)" and it would start ringing, then this wierd number called me (I'm assuming the number it randomly called for me)

So then I went online through my gmail and set it up, reentered the 004* stuff and after the second time doing it it worked perfect.

I set GV up and when I did a test call, it didnt goto GV. I did the method abovee and I got the message saying fowarding was active. I checked my GV number like 5 times and had to change it in the settings, but still doesnt work. Does it take time to set up? Maybe I should just wait and try tomarrow.

Ok so I have gotten the confirmation code, entered it just fine. When I click on Google voice on my phone it says, Set up voicemail.. I click Configure, it comes up with Voicemail service, ( My carrier and Google Voice) I select Google Voice then it comes up with Voicemail Number. I put in my voicemail number ex. ( 2021234444 ) and it just goes back to the Setup Voicemail screen..

What am I doing wrong?

How many other people are having volume issues when listening to voicemails on Google Voice?
Two problems I have with Google Voice: (1) volume is so low I can barely hear the message (2) I don't get the notification right away - actually I get my gmail notification before the google voice notification...any suggestions?
