Visual voicemail

Those of us coming from iPhones are used to visual voicemail, it shows us by contact name, who called and when and allows skipping around to listen to a message by contact. I miss that feature now that I am using the inspire. Any app I can download to bring back the convenience of visual voicemail?

It's awkward coming back to a voicemail icon, and no clue as to who left the message unless I listen to it(them). Sometimes I am in no cell zones, and don't hear the phone ring, but when I am in better reception areas, I might have 3 or 4 messages waiting.

Thanks for the google voice suggestion, now I can just read transcribed messages instead of having to listen to them go on and on about calling them back. :)

I can't believe that any smart phone would NOT come with visual voicemail. Even the blunder of a phone like the Samsung Instinct came with it. Not bashing...just saying...I thought visual voicemail was pretty standard.

I am with you forddna... I thought a smartphone would have it. I'm not impressed with google voice or youmail. I guess maybe I need to look more into Google voice. I've had a number for a while, but unsure how to make it function on my phone. So here are my elementary questions.

Do I have to download a special google voice app?
Do I have to give people my google number?
Not interested in transcription - some terms which are common in my voicemails computers NEVER transcribe right.
Is there a fee involved (with google voice or you mail?) Not interested in paying for anything which should have come with the service... ATT provides it with the iphone, why not for the rest of their phones?

Do I have to download a special google voice app? Yes

Do I have to give people my google number? No

or you mail? Yes and No. It's an ad supported app, but you can also purchase a version without ads.

What is wrong with the visual voicemail plus available in the market? And not everyone wants more unremovable features on their phone that they would never use. There is a perfectly good free app in the market for those inclined to type in "visual voicemail" into the market search bar.

With any of the apps you guys mentioned, do any of them allow you to save the file to SD card?

I ask becaues this was an issue with my last phone when my brother passed away. It was really difficult to save those old voicemails outside of the phone itself.

It's a carrier issue. Other carriers offer visual voice mail with their Android phones. I don't know why AT&T doesn't.

Ohh..good to know. I see you are right, in that Captivate doesn't have it, yet the Sprint variant, Epic, does. Odd that AT&T would be that way.

The biggest problem with google voice is that playback quality on the device sucks. Also, you cannot forward the voicemail in a message from the device.

Google Voice also sends me an email with the recorded voicemail so that can definitely be forwarded via email.

I've been using YouMail. The only issue with it is that it uses Caller ID to tell you who called. I'm going to try Visual Voicemail app next and I'll let you know.

Don't work on ATT branded phones

I recently switched from iPhone 4 to Atrix.... I don't like Google Voice app too much... although the features are great, the playback quality is horrible, and it isn't seem to be configures with the phone's proximity sensor. Any suggestions of a better VV app?
Thanks.
