Help Vodafone card?

Sorry for the noob question, but what is the Vodafone card in my D3?
Is it strictly for the global service? or is it needed for 3G service?

I ask because I just got a brand new(refurbished) replacement in the mail and I activated it without the card in it.
I have ZERO 3g sevice, even after popping it in.
I'm wondering if I received a defective phone, or if it has something to do with this card...

It is a GSM SIM that's used for GSM services outside the US, where the phone cannot get CDMA networks.

In settings->wireless & networks->mobile networks->network mode, is it set to GSM/UMTS? If so, try changing to CDMA or Global (I set mine to CDMA so that the phone doesn't look for a GSM signal if I lose CDMA.)

Oh, one other place:

settings->Battery & data manager->data delivery. Is Data enabled turned on?

(Everything I mentioned should be on if you activated the phone, though.)
