Voice dialing

Thanks for your info.. I have the same build as you do.. If I am ever near a knowledgeable Verizon store I will ask

1) as stated earlier.. motorola has acknowledged as a problem... Google has also identified as an issue.. so you are one of the lucky ones.. it does concern me when an electroic item has such variety in functional performance

2) a number of the posts above deal with non VZW phones...and lower versions of the software

3) I have tried the google search solution and it doesn't work for me.. Motorola's suggestion was to delete contact list and manually enter

4) Even if it works right my underestandin is the stock Voice Non-Dail application only auto dials if it finds THE EXACT MATCH... if it has several then you must physically choose/

Other voice control items such as Navigation works just fine..

again I am happy yours works, I appreciate the info on the builds, but i the end i needed to spend the 3.99 (less then a beer) to get my phoneto be a street legal phone... yes I treid a lot of work arounds

You just use the voice search function by holding down the magnifying glass button and then say "call _______".

You are right. I simply held down the magnifing glass as if to do a search and I said call _____, it dialed out and connected me with ______'s phone. Thanks. No need to waste good beer money buying an app.

Yes, this "phone" comes with the voice commands, but they are not reliable.

for example, if I say "call Dave mobile" it might go ahead and call, or it might pop up a confirmation window I have to click "yes" to....

I don't want to have to look at the device....I want to hit a button, say my command and have it dial.

On my old POS dumb phone, I could either press the voice command button on the side, or on my plantronics bluetooth 520 and say my command and it would dial.

Is this too much to ask for? I mean cmon....this thing scans bar codes and finds me the best prices, takes me right to there website, can navigate to the store and display a coupon to get it cheap..... but it cant dial a phone number without intervention???????

It only does those things if through apps. There is also an app for what you're asking. That's what's so great about these phones: Many don't care for this feature, but many do, so "there's an app for that" :)

mostly everybody here is talking about "voice Dialer" that comes with the phone. They have also mentioned holding the search button to active it. However my phone activates "voice search" which is different and searches the web for whatever I say.

How can i enable a long press of the search button to launch "voice dialer" instead of "voice search"?

Yyyyeah, but there is no app that will make voice dialing, with a bluetooth, work _right_. You still need to interact with the phone screen itself.

I contacted Motorola about this subject and here is their response.

Dear Richard,
Thanks for reaching out to Motorola. I

This may help;

I tried the voice dialing with the long press and it did not work at all, always brought up a google search. Then I thought, how about if I add the contact to my gmail contacts?

And voila!!! It worked out of the gate, so I assume that voice dialer does not search non gmail contacts. So I just put my most common people to call in my gmail contacts and now voice dial with a long press.

Hope this helps a few of you.

Thanks for the tip. Allmy contacts are on exchange, so that's a no go. Ill just keep using a voice dial shortcut.

Even with cheap phones you can "say a command" right from the bluetooth earpiece and make a phone call. Too bad Droid doesn't have this very function yet; you have to press a button in the screen to do so.

I've been following this thread and thought I could add some clarification. We developed Voice Dialer HF because there was no way to reliably call hands-free while driving with the Droid.

Google Voice Search is not a reliable dialer (yet)

  • - It is hit and miss with different contacts (try several, don't assume you are good because one worked).
  • - You must be exact the first time. "Call Bob Smith" is not good enough, you must say "Call Bob Smith at other"
  • - For the contacts where it is a miss, you get a list, and then web results.
  • - May get periodic "Connection Failed. Try Again." messages when it sends the audio to Google.

The regular Voice Dialer only listens once, then brings up a list.

Voice Dialer HF talks with you ("say a command" and the like) until you give voice confirmation for the number to dial.

Limitations:

  • - Uses a camera button press to start, not the Bluetooth button (because Android's BT stack is missing that functionality).
  • - Converses with the user via speakerphone/mic (though this works well if using the car dock). Does not use BT until call is placed. No good for phone-in-pocket dialing.
  • - Have to pay money for something that should have come with the phone.

For more info, we go into great detail here.

@DFXmobile: You say that the BT stack is missing the requirements to allow the user to initiate voice dialing from the BT earpiece, however I am able to do this with my Motorola BT earpiece and Android 1.5 on an HTC Magic (Rogers).

I can not test Voice Dialer HF because we do not have paid apps here in Canada, but I have successfully been able to perform proper hands free voice dialing on my phone _with_ my BT headset for free by using TopVoiceControl with "Act on single result" turned on, and by creating Contact entries with only one number, and a simple recognizable name that is dissimilar to any other contact.

Maybe a dumb question but is this a Droid issue or a Android issue. Does Bluetooth dialing work on other android phones?

@Jweb: There are two issues.

1. Whether or not a BT earpiece can start the voice dialer by pressing the button on the _earpiece_ or if you have to press the button on the phone.

2. The default Voice Dialer app (for MOST users) does not seem to support initiating a call without having to confirm by touching the screen.

I am using an HTC Magic (Rogers factory ROM) and I _CAN_ use the button on my BT earpiece to start the voice dialer.

In order to make hands-free calls, I have had to use the TopVoiceCommand app, and create contacts with only one number, and with an easy to say name which is not like any other contact or app on my phone.

mjschmidt and I have been corresponding on the side. It looks like Rogers accepted a special non-Google-approved HTC build with enhancements (like Exchange sync and a modified BT stack).

Engadget article: Rogers' HTC Dream and Magic aren't "Google phones," have Exchange support -- Engadget

This explains why this phone accepts the BT voice dial initiation command, but the Verizon Droid Eris (also from HTC) and some other carriers' HTC Magic phones do not.
