You mean the Voice Search app that came on the phone? I never used this much on this or my old phone, but I just tested it. Sent a text, searched a couple of web sites, and used it to navigate home from work. (GPS locked on right away and stayed accurate the whole way,btw) The Voice Search worked perfectly for me. Sorry to hear you are having problems.
Ya it may work for some apps but not others. I do a lot of voice to texting while driving so it kind of.sucks that I can't get this working

I just tried saying "navigate to McDonalds" straight into the navigation app and it worked for me. Weird. Did you try the Voice Search way like I was talking about? It's already installed on the phone.
Yes the voice recognition is not working properly on my M886 It appears that it has to do with the background noise, when I am in the car it won't hear my speech it has to be totally silence otherwise it does not work. I had an AscendII and did not have this problem I am going to exchange this new phone today and see if I notice any difference.

I think it might be the background noise, seeing that i had the GPS issue when i was driving.
I think the voice recognition problem is related to Bluetooth. I suspect there is "confusion " as to where to pick up voice and instead it craps out.
Thought it was the voice dial app but I removed that and still get the same problem with Vlingo installed
I bet it would stop if I removed vlingo too.

No. It is an intermittent problem with this phone. Disabling Bluetooth and reenabling resolved once. Could others try that when they experience the problem?

Ive never had an issue with the bluetooth. I have it synced to my truck, audio is fine and calls are clear as well on my Jabra cruiser transmitter for the company truck and my DD, seems fine other than its an FM transmitter. To my Galaxy Tab but that something else, some Bluetooth headset for when i go workout but those broke(POS refurbished crap) Oh and to my Xbox Bluetooth headset.

Voice recognition doesn't work at all for me. It doesn't seem to hear me at all. The Google search or the voice thing for my keyboard. They just sit there listening and not hearing anything. The voice bar that shows how loud you are barely moves. Really makes this great phone worthless. Going to exchange it tomorrow. Hope for the best. Funny thing is people hear me great on a voice call, and I've listened and it's very clear. If I use the voice recorder it's very unclear with static and noise.

There's definitely problems with the voice to text function on this phone, I had a Samsung transfix prior to the Mercury and it would pick up my voice very easily while talking at normal volume, with the mercury It seems I have to yell at it and it still gets a lot of words wrong or misses words altogether, hopefully they can improve this issue with an update.
I just hope its not a hardware (microphone) issue because it seems anything related to recording audio is very poor quality, even when recording video the audio playback is horrific vs. the samsung transfix.

So I tried downloading some other voice recording apps and recording at 48khz 16bit. In a perfectly quiet room at night the recording is full of static. I really hope the microphones aren't defective I finally get a good new phone after the horror that was the Zio and now this huge issue :/ I use the voice recognition for nearly all input!

It's strange that some people are having this issue. I tried it with the Google search bar widget and it worked with no problem. I didn't speak very loud and not even into the microphone and it worked the first try. So far it has worked fine for every function I've tried. I feel bad that mine works and I don't even use it, and the people who need it are having problems. All I can say is try to exchange them, because they are not all like that. Good luck, guys!
PS- the voice RECORDING is a whole different issue. I think that sucks for everybody. Have you tried any other speech to text apps like vlingo?

Even the voice dialer it comes with wasn't working.
It all seems to be detecting the voice somewhat now though, but there is still lots of static and not very accurate, but it's at least something.

- For those of you who it's not hearing you at all, try adjusting the back cover, I think there's a slight possibility that it wasn't aligned for the mic hole. Also try speaking without the cover at all, the hole might be a touch too small.
- For those where it's kind of working, when you record using the google app and it shows the "working" screen with the sound wave, does the sound wave maxed out mostly, kind of like it clips at the top with max amplitude? My old phone and a friends shows a tiny wave, it seems like this one maxes out and gets lots of static with the voice.

I'm pretty sure the voice recognition and the voice recording issues are not related, since my voice recognition works fine, but the sound recording sucks. Read through the thread "Photo and Video Quality" for some more discussion about the sound recording issue. Forum member mathesar found out the audio is being recorded in an unusual format, which is probably the issue with the voice recording apps as well if I had to guess.

Out of curiosity I recorded audio on my Mercury & Ipod touch 4 simultaneously, I put them side by side and started the stock voice recording app on both, I then transferred the files to my PC.
The Ipod records at 44,000 Hz sample rate/ .mp4a format and the Mercury records at only 8,000 Hz / .amr narrow band format, the difference in audio quality upon playback is staggering... The ipod recorded crystal clear with no hint of distortion or fuzziness, when there is complete silence the Mercury still has a constant fuzzy sounding feedback in the audio which might be attributing to the voice recognition issues.
I'm not sure what Cricket and or Huawei was thinking but we can only hope someone can address this issue at some point, Changing the codec from the current AMR format to anything else seems like it would be a good start.

Also worth noting the samples I recorded were both 31 seconds long and the Mercury file size was only 24KB vs. Ipods 252KB.

My bad, it's still jacked. If there is to much background noise it doesn't hear squat. No recognition of anything being said. Basically outdoors in the city it doesn't work. It's just fine in a relatively quiet room. I think the noise is so overwhelming for it that it can't differentiate voice from static so it's all canceled out and it hears nothing. Also, as far as recording, you can get other recording apps from the market that will save in high quality but it still sounds like shit.

Interesting I tried an app called Tape-a-Talk and set it to 44.1kHz 16bit .wav, the sound quality is far better vs. the stock app's AMR format but still not quite as clean vs. my Ipod, the mercury seems to have a constant low "hiss" in the background that's not present on the Ipod.
