Help Voicemail and SMS

I need a poll from worldwide Desire Z (HTC) users.

Does everybody get an SMS along with a voicemail notification when new voicemails are received?

I've been told it is the phones fault for that and the carrier can't change it. Seems like nonsense to me but would like to have more information to call them on it.

I'm looking for carrier based versions of Android to test this.

I've been told it works with all HTC phones, in this manner.

My Desire Z and my old Nokia N97 receive an SMS that I got a vmail message. I'm on Bell now. Prior to that, I had a Nokia 6126 on Fido. I also get an SMS when I receive vmail. I always assumed it was a function of the carrier/voice mail system.
