VOIP over voice network?

This isn't about any problem, but I'm asking some smart people to share some knowledge.

I have a friend who calls and texts with her iPod touch with an app (not sure which), and I AM able to receive and send her messages with Go Sms Pro, even if I shut my data off.

How is it possible for her to use her WiFi at home, and have that message be sent over Verizon's voice network? I could see if used a VOIP app like Viber or Text+, but I just don't understand how this works, but I want to.

well first of all find out what app she is using. More than likely that app somehow sends a text message similar to how you can send one via email to someones phone. Example when i'm out of the country a lot of times if i need to text someone on their phone from my email i send the text to this address: xxxxxxxxxx@vtext.com

with the x's being the phone number. That then gets sent to their phone as an sms message.

voice is the same way. It's basically VoIP like you mentioned which is an acronym for Voice Over IP(meaning ip address)

Next year VZW is scheduled to role out the first VoLTE markets which is similarly an acronym for Voice Over LTE.

Ip is an acronym for Internet protocol. Most people just reference ip though. For instance I use VoIP phones a lot at work. We wouldn't pronounce Internet protocol. We'd say ip.
