Root Volume key broken.. desire

i want to root my desire but my down volume key is broken.. Can i still root it ??

Umm, maybe. ;-)
I know holding back and the power button takes you to either fastboot or HBOOT, not sure if you can navigate your way back from there. Give it a go.

I would never recommend rooting if any hardware button is broken. Why is it broken, or more to the point, how?

I had a problem with the volume down button. Sent it back to HTC and they repaired it (you have a 2 year warranty) and came back good as new.
