VPN's and Android

I am going to subscribe to a vpn soon, and I hope to be able to use it with the 'droid I will soon be buying. Do all versions of Android treat VPN's the same way? I will likely be buying 2 tablets, a simpler, cheaper one to watch movies and chat with (I think android 2 or 3 might even be adequate for this) and then a quad core tablet which will have android 4.x
 
Android 4.0 and above handles VPNs significantly better as an issue with PPTP encryption was resolved then.
