Help Wake phone on incoming text message?

Is there a way to configure the phone so it wakes up (screen lights up) when a text message come in?

handcent does that for you; the screen lights up and it gives you a popup window to type your reply in without actually going in to open your messages. do not know of any way to configure something similar using the stock messaging app
 
SMS Popup (Free - Adam K) may be something you can try that'll allow you to see a notification popup on your phone.

If prefer to use your Pre Installed SMS application then you can try..

SMSAwake (Free - Andrew Schimmer) Turns on the screen for 5 seconds when you get an message. This isn't a launchable application. It runs in the background using very little recourses.

to turn on the screen when it is black right? i use handcent and when i get a message the screen automatically turns on and shows the popup text that i can reply to, it quickly goes back to sleep if no action is taken and the trackball continues to flash to remind you to read/reply
 
SMSAwake turns the phone on from sleep. I don't remember if it automatically remove the lock screen. But it was useful when I had it.
 
thanks, basically my wife just wants the screen to light up when a message arrives. she uses an ipod when she works out (i know she could use the eris) so she can't hear notifications. we'll give them a try.
 
WOW... SMSAwake was perfect .... now i dont have to push the power button to wake my phone to check my messages.. I still ahve to slide the screen lock but its ok... i just didnt want to wear out my power button
