Root Want to move to Gingerbread from VRZ RUU 2.1

Hi All,
I am a total newbie to rooting so I want to make sure I don't screw up my eris.
I am on verizons official RUU 2.1 and I want to go to gingerbread. I have a few issues with my Eris with lagging, freezing, dropped calls and phone not ringing on occasions.
Can someone explane what I need to do...link for GB or other suggestions.
I like the apps that I have and want to continue using them but don't mind reinstalling them.

I'm not sure how to backup either.

1. Download the CM7 Gingerbread ROM from here: [ROM] 8/04/11 Condemned CM7 V17 (2.3.5) - xda-developers . Follow the link that says "Condemned CM7 V17 - Stripped 2 Hell" toward the top.

2. Read and do almost all of what it says here: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html

3. The things is step 2 that you will do different are these:

a. Replace anything that mentions "PlainJaneT2" with the CondemnedSoul CM7 zip file that you downloaded in step 1. You don't need to download that PlainJane ROM file.

Well, that's pretty much it.

flash CM7 (condemned or GSB)
flash google apps

Condemned does not require google apps flash - one of the reasons that I recommend it to new rooters over GSB. Cace2cache, let's wait on that until it's clear it's necessary.

First things first. Root using the "Dummies" thread linked to above, which will walk you through rooting, restarting in Amon_RA Recovery, making a Nandroid backup (which will save the exact state of your phone, so you can go back if the flash doesn't work), and installing the Gingerbread ROM.

GSB requires google apps too since they are licensed, in case you go that route. GSB is no longer being updated so Condemned may be the way to go.

CM7 stands for CyanogenMod version 7. CyanogenMod is a team of developers that take open sourced Android code and create custom ROMs for Android phones. Version 7 of their build is the Gingerbread (2.3.x) version.

Standard CyanogenMod comes with a bunch of extra software, wallpapers, sounds maybe, etc., that really aren't all that necessary, and the Stripped 2 Hell version of CondemnedSoul's CM7 build removes many of those extras to give you just the build that you need to run Android 2.3.4 on the Eris. Vanilla is fine, but I prefer the stripped version myself.

It has only been an hour and already there is a HUGE differance.

I am currently out of work and could not afford a new phone but now I can keep my little Eris and be very happy and extreamly greatful to you all!!!
