Root Want to Root.... But

Hi Everyone,

Sorry I know this is probaly the same topic you hear everyday.

I've never rooted before... read a lot about it. But with the two sets of updates comming out in short time I figured I'd ask before I did anything. I want to root to improve my phone and get rid of bloatware. A lot of people seem to like the syndicate rom/frozen so I think I will go with that.

However I did NOT get the first ota update a couple weeks ago. (I must be a leper.) My build # says Eclair.DI18 and Kernel 2.6.29.

I see though that the frozen rom is based on "EB13". Which obviously I don't have. I think I have it right though. I'm downloading the "EB13-8GB tar", I have the victory_8G.pit and odin and the "clock work". However I don't understand what is meant by "wipe, wipe, wipe". Also I want the "fully loaded" correct?

Now when the "new" ota comes out. What should I do, ignore it and what for a new syndicate rom to come out?

As newb pointed out above, that thread he links will point you towards everything you need. Points to know:

1. What version you're currently running, which you know is DI18.
2. Within the first few posts of that thread, they'll give instructions if you're coming from DI18. Follow them to a frickin tee.
3. Most important step I can point out is make sure to flash your ROM after rooting (which isn't an option any other way) but BEFORE rebooting your phone if you're going to EXT4 filesystem. If you try and reboot your phone before flashing a ROM, you'll be in for a world of headaches, which can easily be avoided.
4. Just when you think you know what you're doing...go back and read some more.
5. It's better to have too many files on your SD card than not enough. Put all zip files on there you think you'll need that are ROM related.

My suggestion? Wait for ACS to release SRF 1.1 which will be based off the latest Sprint update of EC05. They'll update the original posts with instructions on what to do depending on where you're coming from.

Standard vs. Fully-Loaded = if you want all the sprint "stuff" on there, go fully loaded. If not, go with Standard. I personally use standard as I was able to put on what I wanted and only what I wanted.

I have no problem answering questions when it appears as though you've actually done a bit of research yourself first. Frankly, I love helping those people because it's obvious they would prefer to help themselves, they're just stuck. It's the ones who blatently have done zero reading or thinking for themselves I have trouble with...
 
A quick and dirty summary of what to do in order (I think):

1. Read
2-4. See and repeat step 1 ;)
5. Download files you think you'll need to desktop and to SD card
6. Back everything up, preferably via nandroid which is located within "Backup/Restore" when in Clockwork (just naviagte there and choose "backup")
7. Save the files you want on your SD card, and then from there, save them on your PC just in case.
8. One-click root
9. If going to EXT4 make sure you flash the ROM of your choice before rebooting your phone and after "wipe, wipe, wipe"
10. Chances are, the first time you flash a new ROM on EXT4, it may not quite work. If that's the case, DON'T PANIC, it's okay.
11. Reboot into recovery and reflash the ROM after wiping everything 3x again.
12. Reboot phone (via clockwork), BAM, goodness to the nth degree :D

"SyndicateROM Fully Loaded - the choice of ACS team lead rjmjr69 - features TouchWiz instead of LauncherPro, and adds in Social Network Sync, Facebook, BuddiesNow, Program Monitor, and the stock live wallpapers. All the rest of the bloat is still gone!"

So, no, all the Sprint stuff is removed, with the Samsung stuff remaining, if that is something you are looking for.

This is correct, I was wrong in my post above. The Sprint stuff is removed from both versions, but I believe they have a "sprintapps.zip" or something like that available to download if you want to put it all back on there.
 
Ok, so here's the deal.....I own a droid x and have rooted it. My buddy has a samsung epic 4g running 2.1 DI18 kernal 2.6.29. I have been reading up on how to root his phone and I am seeing many diff methods. I have seen one click methods and more difficult routes to take. The big issue that worries me is the flashing the rom......Do I really need to do that? what would be the easiest way to go about this? thanks in advanced for any help!

No need to flash a ROM. :)

Check out the method listed in the locked thread titled "Wip" for the easiest way to root the Epic.
 
Ok..............so how do i find that thread? im new on this particular forum and im having some trouble getting there lol

As long as you don't go to EXT4, you can certainly root without needing to flash a ROM. If you change file systems, that's when you'd have to flash something or the old state won't boot.

If you get the one-click CWM 2.x.x.x you should be all set to go.
 
if it doesnt reboot within five minutes restart. i restarted it and it closed the phone files on the comp but the phone didnt reboot
 
Do you have USB Debugging enabled? Hit Menu/Settings/Applications/Development and make sure it's checked.

Connect the USB to the phone and try again.


A few other things to check or try would be a different USB port (perhaps one on the back of the computer) or a different USB cable as the stock one usually is problematic for anything more than charging.
 
thank you very much, one more question....I have a bootstrap recovery for my device, is there something like that for the epic or should i use the same program onn his phone?
